LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team went toe-to-toe with No. 12/11 Loyola and had a chance to tie things up in the final seconds of play, but the Greyhounds held on for a 14-13 win at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium Saturday evening. Loyola, which posted wins over No. 1 Maryland and No. 9 Johns Hopkins early in the season, improved to 5-2 (2-0 PL), while Bucknell fell to 1-6 (0-2 PL).
Eight different Bison scored in the seesaw affair, and Dutch Furlong registered his third hat trick of the season to go along with a pair of assists. Tanner Germain, Jack Feda and Brendan Coyle each scored twice. Loyola's Matthew Minicus paced the Greyhounds with seven goals.
Bucknell put together a strong day in the faceoff X, winning 19 of 30, but it was successful on just 13 of 22 clear attempts and finished with 20 turnovers in the game. The Bison forced 18 turnovers and led 43-40 in shot attempts.
Coyle, who personally went 14 for 22 on faceoffs, scored his second goal of the game and of his career with 9:07 to play in the fourth quarter to get Bucknell within one of tying. It would be the last goal of the game by either team, however, as Bucknell came up empty on five shot attempts down the stretch. Bucknell had the final possession with 23 seconds left but turned it over on a crease violation.

A close game throughout, Loyola led by three on just two brief occasions – a 7-4 advantage at halftime and an 8-5 lead early in the third. The two teams were separated by a single goal most of the way. Bucknell led twice, including 1:05 into the contest when Will Hopkins found the back of the cage to get the Bison on the board first. The Bison also used a 3-0 run in the third quarter that included goals by Cam Doolan, Furlong and Feda to grab a 10-9 lead with 3:19 to play in the third frame.
Loyola would end the third with two goals in the final 38 seconds and scored early in the fourth to jump out in front for good.
Both goalies went the distance, as Jaz Zanelli posted 12 saves and Loyola's Luke Staudt totaled 14.
Coyle, who was working on a career performance, led the Bison with seven ground balls. Eight different Bison tallied one caused turnover apiece. Meyer also put together a solid outing with a goal, two assists and three ground balls. Danny Striano added four ground balls as well.
Bucknell goes on the road for its next two contests, beginning with a 1 p.m. game at Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. on Saturday, March 25.
