POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Bucknell women's lacrosse team rolled past Marist for its first win of the season, defeating the Red Foxes 17-12 thanks to a strong offensive showing at Tenney Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Bison were particularly good early in the game, as they posted five first-quarter goals and added six more before halftime.
Ten different Bison found the back of the cage, and four scored multiple times. The effort was led by junior Emily Baird's four-goal performance. Sophomore Allie Boyce also added a hat trick, as she joined Baird with four points along with Taylor McClain, who handed out four assists on the day.
Bucknell led by as many as nine in the third quarter after opening the game on an 8-0 run. It was Taylor Kopan's fast-break goal with 4:11 to play in the third that gave the Bison a 13-4 lead. Marist made a late comeback attempt and cut the deficit to four on multiple occasions in the final frame, but the Bison held on for their second-ever win over the Red Foxes.
The Bison finished the game with a sizable difference in shots (41-26), including a 13-3 advantage over the first 15 minutes that allowed them to jump out to a 5-0 lead before entering the second. Marist caught up in the category during the second half and outscored Bucknell 8-6 over the final two frames.
Trailing 14-7 at the start of the fourth, Marist scored four unanswered over the first 4:16 of the quarter to get within striking distance, but Baird notched her fourth goal of the afternoon to put an end to the comeback. Boyce scored her third of the day a couple of minutes later, and Marist was unable to overcome the six-goal margin.
Three Bison collected their first career goals, including freshmen Bella Koch, freshman Caroline Sheridan, and sophomore Aliza Thir. Koch ended up with two in the game, netting a pair of free-position strikes within two minutes of each other during a second-quarter stretch that saw the two teams trade goals eight times in succession.
Freshman Katie Browne was the fourth Bison to tally multiple goals, while Megan Krestinski, Carly Cenci, Sheridan, and Caroline Miller also added one each. Eight Bison finished with at least one caused turnover, led by Caitlin McHale's three. McHale also registered three ground balls.
Bucknell dominated at the draw circle, winning 20 of 33. McHale and Ella Payer collected seven each, and Baird added five more to go along with her four goals.
Senior goalie Symone Ryans totaled 11 saves in the contest. Marist's Miranda Lambert started the first half and finished with eight saves and 11 goals against before Morgan Carroll came in to start the second half, finishing with seven saves.
Bucknell is back on the road next weekend to face Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pa. at noon on Saturday, Feb. 25.
