Bucknell at a Glance
- Fresh off one of its most impressive non-conference wins in team history, Bucknell shifts its focus back to Patriot League play as Lafayette comes to town for a critical match on Saturday afternoon.
- It will be Youth Day at Emmitt Field, as kids are encouraged to wear their soccer jerseys and play on the inflatables throughout the day. The 1 p.m. men's game against Boston University is the first half of a soccer doubleheader, and then the women host Lafayette at 4 p.m.
- Saturday is also Senior Day, as Bucknell's five seniors will be honored just prior to their final regular-season home match. Jenna Hall, Eva Frankovic, Hannah Stuck, Lea Tarzy, and Brooke Tracey comprise this year's senior class.
- On Tuesday night at Princeton, the Bison pulled out a 1-0 win over a Tigers side that came into the game with an 8-2-3 record and a No. 8 RPI ranking. Princeton's only previous losses were to Penn State and Brown, two teams currently ranked No. 4 and 15 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. The only other teams to shut out Princeton this season were Penn State and Rutgers.
- Bucknell had been 1-10-1 all-time against Princeton, with the lone win coming in 2007 and the draw in 2016. In the other 10 matches, the Tigers won by a combined 36-6 margin, including a 6-1 verdict on Bucknell's last trip to Princeton two seasons ago.
- The Bison were outshot 23-5 in Tuesday's match, but Jenna Hall came up with 10 saves and the back four shut the door late in the match. Teresa Deda was on the finishing end of the game's only goal in the 84th minute. The sequence was set up by a takeaway from Laura Schmidt in the back followed by a perfectly placed cross from Henna Andican that dropped between the two center backs for Deda's long run.
- It was the second straight mid-week game in which the Bison handed an opponent their first home loss of the season. Princeton had been 6-0-1 at home, and last week's 1-0 win at Loyola ruined the Greyhounds' perfect 8-0 home ledger.
- The Bison will put a 13-game home unbeaten streak of their own on the line on Saturday. They are 7-0-6 dating back to their last home loss against Princeton on Sept. 27, 2022.
- Bucknell currently sits alone in third place in the Patriot League standings with 12 points from a 3-1-3 record, and the Bison can clinch a Patriot League Tournament berth with a win over Lafayette on Saturday.
- Loyola remains atop the table with a 5-2 record and 15 points, while Army (4-2-1) is second with 13 points. Just behind the Bison are Boston University (11), Lehigh (10), American (10), Holy Cross (9), Lafayette (9), and Colgate (7). Only Navy (3) has been eliminated from contention for one of the six Patriot League Tournament spots with two rounds of conference play remaining.
- Deda and Andican have ranked among the top three Patriot League scorers all season, and both added to their accounts on Tuesday at Princeton. Deda now has six goals to go with her league-leading seven assists, and she ranks second to Loyola's Baylee DeSmit in goals and points. Andican now has five goals and six assists for 16 points, and she ranks third in the league in all three categories.
- Over the last week, Deda has now had a hand in four of the team's five goals (2G, 2A). She now has 10 goals and 27 assists for 47 career points in less than three collegiate seasons. Her 27 assists are the second-most in team history.
- Along with Deda and Andican, Temple (3-3-9), Reese Evans (3-1-7), Hannah Stuck (2-3-7), Kelley Francis (3-0-6), Katie Schiano (1-4-6), and Meghan White (1-4-6) are other top point-producers.
- Over the last two games, two Bison juniors notched their first career points. Kalli Wethern assisted on Paige Temple's go-ahead goal in what became a 3-3 draw with Boston University on Saturday, and Schmidt was credited with an assist on Deda's goal at Princeton.
- Hall had a memorable game in last week's 1-0 win at Loyola. Hall made eight saves, including three sensational stops in the final minute of the match, and her 23rd career shutout broke the Bucknell record. Jessica Ratner recorded 22 clean sheets from 2013-16. Ten of those came during her senior year, when she helped the Bison to the Patriot League title.
- Hall currently ranks eighth nationally in total saves with 98, and her .845 save percentage ranks 35th nationally and best in the Patriot League.
- The Bison went 5-2-1 in eight matches leading up to the conference opener. The only two losses came in succession to top-25 sides Georgetown and Pittsburgh, but after that they posted a 1-1 draw against a good Villanova team, followed by three straight wins over La Salle (3-1), Colorado College (5-2), and Air Force (2-1).
- Bucknell is the two-time defending Patriot League champion. Last season, the second-seeded Bison won penalty-kick shootouts against Boston University and Army in the Patriot League Tournament, and then dropped a 1-0 overtime decision at Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament.
- Seniors Jenna Hall, Hannah Stuck, and Brooke Tracey are this year's team captains.
- Kelly Cook is in her ninth season as Bucknell's head coach, and she has led the Bison to four Patriot League championships in her first eight years. Cook owns an 80-58-23 (.568) overall record at Bucknell, including a 43-18-14 (.667) mark in Patriot League play.
- Cook knows the Patriot League very well, as she was a two-year captain and three-time Second Team All-Patriot League selection at Colgate, where she recorded 27 goals and 23 assists in her career. She ranked in the top 10 in program history in career points (77) and assists. As a junior in 2004, Cook (then Kelly Kuss) was named Patriot League Tournament MVP after leading the Raiders to the league title, and then her team knocked off Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, marking the first NCAA win in school and league history.
- Cook has two new assistant coaches in 2023, as former Clarion head coach Alexa Ream and goalkeepers coach PJ Steiner have joined the program.
Lafayette at a Glance
- The Leopards are enjoying a strong season at 7-6-1 overall, 3-4 in the Patriot League, and 5-2-1 at home. Lafayette is tied for seventh place in the Patriot League standings but is just one point out of fifth, two points out of fourth, and three points behind Bucknell for third.
- Like Bucknell, Lafayette has a result against Princeton this season. The Leopards tied the then-13th-ranked Tigers 1-1 in Easton on Sept. 26. Nadia Zaffanella's goal early in the second half was the equalizer.
- The Leopards snapped a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 Senior Day win over Colgate on Saturday. Â Zaffanella again scored the big goal, this one coming in the 13th minute, and the Lafayette defense limited Colgate to only six total shots and just two on target.
- That was Zaffanella's fifth goal of the season, and the freshman leads the squad in goals and points (12). She is tied for the league lead with three game-winning goals and is fifth in points per game.
- Sara Oswald has four goals and two assists for 10 points, and Katrina Santelli and Rory Schauder have three each. Santelli is the younger sister of former Bison Mary Santelli.
- Lindsay Dewar has started 13 games in goal for the Leopards and has 63 saves with 16 goals against for a .797 save percentage. That mark is third-best in the league, behind Bucknell's Jenna Hall and Holy Cross' Julia Walsh. Freshman Catherine Apker's lone start was a good one, an eight-save performance against Princeton.
- Head coach Mick Statham is in his 18th season on the Lafayette sideline.
- Bucknell holds a 24-7-3 record in a series that dates back to 1990.
- The Bison have had the better of the recent series, going 17-1-2 in the last 20 meetings. That run includes an 11-match winning streak from 2004-14.
- Bucknell is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings with the draw coming in the COVID-modified spring 2021 season.
- The Bison enter Saturday's game with a 301:58 scoreless streak against Lafayette. The Leopards' last goal against Bucknell came from Riley Dowd in the 79th minute in Bucknell's 2-1 win in Easton in 2019.
- Bucknell won last year's matchup in Easton by a 2-0 scoreline, with both goals coming from seniors. Abby Gearhart scored the opening goal in the ninth minute, and Rylee Donaldson finished a breakaway with just two seconds remaining in the match. Teresa Deda assisted on both goals, and Donaldson also added an assist on the Gearhart goal. The Bison outshot the Leopards 14-4 on the night.
- In the last meeting in Lewisburg in 2021, Donaldson scored the lone goal in a 1-0 Bucknell win. The Bison finished with a 26-7 shot advantage but only managed the one goal in the 30th minute.
- Even though these two teams have squared off in every one of Bucknell's 33 varsity seasons, they have met just once in the postseason. That was a 2-0 Bison win at Emmitt Field in the 2016 Patriot League Tournament semifinals. The Bison would go on to defeat Boston University two days later to claim the championship. Â Â
- Bucknell closes out the regular season on the road at Lehigh on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
- Teams seeded 3-6 will turn right back around and play a Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal game the following Sunday, with the two higher-seeded teams hosting.
