Two Second-Half Goals Lift Women’s Soccer Past Lafayette as Bison Clinch Postseason Bid
10/21/2023 8:13:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's soccer team locked up another Patriot League Tournament berth as Paige Temple and Teresa Deda notched second-half goals in a 2-0 win over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at windy Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. Now 10-3-4 overall and 4-1-3 in the Patriot League, the Bison moved into second place, just one point behind Army for the top spot, with one regular-season game remaining.
Jenna Hall, one of five seniors honored before their final regular-season home game, logged five saves on the way to her 25th career shutout. Classmates Eva Frankovic, Brooke Tracey, and Lea Tarzy also played important defensive roles, and midfielder Hannah Stuck put her name on the scoresheet with an assist on Temple's go-ahead goal.
"I am proud of the whole team for sticking with it for 90 minutes and delivering a Senior Day win to a very special class," said head coach Kelly Cook. "This is a really strong Lafayette team, and they are not easy to score against. But we continued to push and scored a nice goal. I'm so happy for the seniors that they got the win today and kept the shutout for Jenna."
With a steady wind at its back, Lafayette (7-7-1, 3-5-0 PL) had the better of the run of play for a good bit of the first half. The Bison got going in the last nine minutes of the half as Deda set up Kalli Wethern for a shot on target and then came up with a steal and fired over the bar.
That inspiration carried over into the second half, as Leopards goalkeeper Lindsay Dewar made two fantastic diving saves in quick succession to deny Deda and Henna Andican from putting Bucknell on the board.
The icebreaker finally did come about 10 minutes later. Stuck's throw sent Andican into space along the right touch line, and the sophomore delivered a perfect cross onto the head of Temple for the close-range goal. Temple notched her fourth goal of the season and third in the last four games, while Andican matched Deda for the team and Patriot League assists lead with her seventh of the year. That total is tied for seventh-most in a season in team history.
Stuck nearly had a goal of her own in the 77th minute, but her solid header from the center of the area rang the crossbar.
Hall was needed for an important save on Emily Coe's well-taken strike from the top of the 18 with 3:30 remaining in a 1-0 match, and then Deda ended it with 2:11 to go. The junior midfielder jumped in front of a Lafayette center back's outlet pass, broke in alone on a clean breakaway, and slipped a shot past Dewar into the left side of the goal. It was Deda's seventh goal of the season to go along with her seven assists.
Bucknell finished with a 16-9 shot advantage and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Dewar made seven saves for Lafayette, which was coming off a Senior Day win of its own against Colgate. The Bison are now 18-1-2 in the last 21 meetings with the Leopards.
Bucknell extended its home winning streak to 14 (8-0-6) dating back to last season. The senior class is now 10-1-6 against Patriot League opponents at Emmitt Field, with the only loss a 1-0 verdict to Navy in the unusual, COVID-modified 2021 spring season.
Loyola entered the day in first place but fell 1-0 at Lehigh on a goal in the 86th minute. That allowed Army and Bucknell to jump ahead of the Greyhounds. Army (5-2-1) has 16 points, while Bucknell (4-1-3) and Loyola (5-3-0) have 15, but the Bison have the head-to-head tiebreaker on Loyola.
Boston University (4-2-2, 14), Lehigh (4-3-1, 13), and American (3-4-1, 10) currently occupy the final three tournament spots, but Holy Cross (2-3-3, 9), Lafayette (3-5-0, 9), and Colgate (2-5-1, 7) are all still alive heading into Wednesday's final regular-season match day.
Bucknell plays at Lehigh at 7 p.m. A win would assure the Bison of a top-two seed and a bye into the semifinals, and a win along with an Army loss or tie against Boston University would give the Bison the top seed and the regular-season title.

Watch this sublime cross by Henna Andican right on the head of Paige Temple for the go-ahead goal! #rayBucknell
