Deda's Late Goal Gives Bucknell Dramatic 1-0 Win over Princeton
10/17/2023 9:12:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J.- The Bucknell Bison women's soccer team (9-3-4) used Teresa Deda's goal in the 84th minute to stun the Princeton Tigers (8-3-3), 1-0 in their home lair on a chilly Tuesday night. It is the Bison's second-ever win against the Ivy League power, who entered the contest ranked eighth nationally in RPI and rated No. 5 in the latest United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll.
The Bucknell defense was under siege all game, but veteran keeper Jenna Hall added to her school record for clean sheets by obtaining her 24th scoreless endeavor. Hall was aided by a Bison defense that buckled but never broke under the Tiger pressure. Princeton outshot Bucknell 23-5, but the Bison only needed one bullseye to win.
No team had beaten Princeton on their home field in 2023 until tonight's game. It was Princeton's first home defeat since losing to Harvard on Oct. 22, 2022. The last home non-conference defeat for the Tigers was on Sept. 8, 2022, when LSU pulled the trick.
It was only the third time this season the potent Princeton offense was held scoreless. Big Ten teams #6 Penn State and Rutgers previously achieved the accomplishment until Bucknell joined them tonight.
"I'm super proud of the whole group tonight," said head coach Kelly Cook. "A lot of different players stepped up and had some big moments, including several who had not played as much throughout the season. Our biggest key is staying disciplined and committed to the system we want to play. They got in behind a few times, but Jenna did a great job being aggressive coming off her line."
"We knew we were going to have to make the most of our scoring opportunities, and we found a great team goal late in the game. Laura Schmidt did a great job stepping in front to win the ball back, and then Henna delivered a great ball to Teresa for the goal."
Recap
The opening 10 minutes of the competition possessed little action, only seeing a single shot by Princeton. Both teams were feeling each other and probing for weak spots.
Princeton launched five shots over the next 20 minutes as the Tigers began to ramp up the pressure. Bucknell recorded only two shots of the first half in the 24th and 25th minutes when Kelley Francis and Henna Andican aimed at the Princeton net. Both shot attempts were saved.
In the following minutes, Cook made wholesale substitutions, proving fortuitous as Princeton started firing shot after shot at the Bucknell backline. The Tigers sent seven shot attempts at the Bucknell goal during the final six minutes of the first half. Hall stood tall and collected five of the chances for saves. Halftime saw both teams deadlocked at 0-0.
Princeton wasted no time attacking the Bison defense at the start of the second half, recording a shot attempt four seconds after the resumption of play. Bucknell recorded its first shot attempt 12 minutes into the second stanza, but Deda's chance was gathered up for a save.
Starting at the 75th minute, Princeton ramped up its offensive pressure again, taking four shots at the Bucknell net. Hall and her defense did not allow the prize, with the goalkeeper gathering two saves. Hall played aggressively all night, fearlessly coming off her line to prevent penetration and close looks at the goal.
The four Bison subs inserted in the 84th minute provided fresh energy and led to the only goal of the game. Laura Schmidt, playing in her sixth game of the year with a season-high 35 minutes on the pitch, intercepted a Princeton pass. She sent the ball to Andican, who saw Deda streaking upfield. A Princeton defender couldn't corral the pass, and Deda pounced on it and fired a screaming shot into the right side of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
The goal zapped Princeton's spirit. Outside of a corner-kick opportunity, the Tigers would not lurk near the Bison goal again. Bucknell, full of spirit and vigor, closed out the massive win when Hall joyfully collected a final, errant pass.
