Field Hockey Downed by Drexel, 3-0, at Home Sunday

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bison field hockey team attempted a season-high 16 shots against Drexel at Graham Field on Sunday, but the Bison were unable to send one to the back of the cage as the Dragons came away with a 3-0 win. Drexel scored two goals in the first quarter and one in the third while denying Bucknell's six shots on goal. The Bison also held a 9-8 advantage in penalty corners.
It was the first time Bucknell (3-6, 2-0 PL) has been kept off the scoreboard this season, and the team is now 2-2 when playing at home. All three of Drexel's goals were scored on penalty corners.
While the Bison's shot total was high, they attempted none over the first 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the Dragons were awarded three corners over the first seven minutes and scored their first goal on one 6:12 into the game. The Bison defense buckled down over the next nine minutes, but Drexel struck again with 28 seconds left to play in the quarter on another penalty corner.
The Bison attempted all five shots in the second and saw solid opportunities with three straight corners over a three-minute span, but three shots were saved, one went wide and another was blocked.
Drexel applied heavy pressure to lead off the second half, seeing three penalty corners over the first 5:27 of the third. It was on its third corner of the frame that Shannon Tringola snuck a third shot past the keeper and extended the deficit to 3-0.
Bucknell saw several more opportunities to dig into the lead, including on six corners over the final 30 minutes and seven shots in the fourth quarter, but none made it past Drexel senior goalkeeper Megan Hadfield, who ended up with six saves in the contest.
Clara McCormick also posted six saves for Bucknell. Freshman Kira Leclercq supplied a team-high five shots for Bucknell, and sophomore Lily Neilson attempted four shots.
Bucknell is back to Patriot League play with a game at Coglate on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 11 a.m. The team then faces Cornell on Saturday.
