4/7/2022 11:56:00 AM | Women's Water Polo
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University women's water polo team will close its regular season with two road games at Harvard and Brown over the weekend.
Bucknell will take on the Crimson at 3 p.m. on Saturday before playing Brown in Providence on Sunday, April 10 at 9 a.m. Both games will be available to stream on ESPN+.
- Bucknell returns to action this weekend after going 1-1 in its last two outings, defeating Mount St. Mary's 7-4 before falling to Michigan 14-7.
- After a 1-1 weekend, the Bison are currently in the fifth seed in the CWPA standings, one game ahead of Saint Francis (Pa.). The Red Flash still have three games to play to Bucknell's two.
- Seeds are still to be decided as the CWPA closes out its regular season, with Mount St. Mary's the only team that's locked in seeding-wise as the seventh seed for the upcoming CWPA Championships in Lewisburg.
- Bucknell last hosted the CWPA Championships in 2018, going 3-1 in the tournament en route to finishing the season at 16-18. The Bison dropped a tough opening contest to Indiana in that game, falling 4-5 to the then 14th-ranked Hoosiers. Bucknell also defeated Saint Francis, Harvard, and Brown in ending the season on a strong note.
- In Bucknell's 7-4 win over The Mount, senior Larissa Hodzic continued her strong season, pouring in three goals as Bucknell jumped out to a quick start, holding The Mount off the scoreboard until the 5:20 mark of the second quarter in scoring four unanswered goals to start the game.
- Hodzic also added six exclusions drawn in the victory over The Mount, a career high.
- Bucknell's four goals to start the game were scored by four different players, as Paige Furano, Chloe Smith, and Bella Moynihan each netted during the opening minutes.
- The four allowed goals for the Bison were the fewest by the program since a 20-3 win over The Mount last season on April 17, 2021.
- Furano posted a big game against Michigan, posting five steals and five exclusions drawn. The senior also added two steals and two exclusions drawn in the first game against The Mount.
- Bucknell faced The Mount and Harvard in back-to-back games on February 26-27. The Bison dropped a 12-7 decision to the Bears on Senior Night at Kinney, before falling in a narrow contest to Harvard in overtime the following morning.
- In the Senior Night matchup against Brown, Hodzic netted a hat trick, while Furano chipped in two goals and four assists for the Bison to go along with two steals. Izzy Lippolis and Isabelle Mongahan also found the back of the cage in the defeat.
- Bucknell nearly toppled the Crimson, who entered that matchup with a nine-game winning streak. First-year Annika Lampen was key for the Bison in that game in the cage, making a career-best 12 saves in keeping the Bison in the game before eventually falling 8-7.
- The Bison are 16-21 against the Crimson in the all-time series, defeating Harvard twice in 2019. Against Brown, Bucknell is 12-19 in 31 games. Bucknell last defeated the Bears 8-4 in 2019, and has taken three out of the past five matchups.
- After this weekend, the Bison will have several weeks to prepare for the CWPA Championship in Lewisburg. First-round games are scheduled to begin on Friday, April 22nd at Kinney Natatorium.
