LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team dropped two games to Lehigh in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Depew Field on Senior Day. Bucknell drops to 16-21 with the pair of losses, and 12-9 in Patriot League contests.
Game One: Lehigh 14, Bucknell 4.
The Mountain Hawks scored nine unanswered runs after a four-run first inning by the Bison to take game one of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
A battle of two of the league's top two pitchers in Will Greer and Lehigh's Luke Rettig threatened to turn into a slugfest early on, as the two teams combined to score seven runs in the first inning.
The Mountain Hawks struck first, managing three runs on three hits in the first. Bucknell responded with four runs of its own in the fourth, with Bucknell's first three of Anthony Sherwin, Chris Cannizzaro, and Grant Voytovich reaching on a walk and two singles, respectively. Voytovich's single brought home Sherwin, before an RBI groundout by Jacob Corson scored Bucknell's second run of the inning.
Tyler Dunn singled home Brendan Lowery all the way from first later on in the inning after a miscue in the outfield by the Mountain Hawks, before designated hitter Mason Kelly capped off the scoring with an RBI single to score Dunn.
Both pitchers settled in after the frantic first inning, going three up and three down over the next two frames until a solo home run from Lehigh's Gerard Sweeney tied the game at four in the top of the fourth inning.
The Bison had their best chance in the bottom of fourth to get back in the game, loading the bases on a fielder's choice, a single by Lyons, and a hit by pitch to Sherwin. However, Rettig managed to get a strikeout and a pop out to end the Bison threat.
Rettig and reliever Nick Pave for the Mountain Hawks limited the Bison to three hits the rest of the way, with the Mountain Hawks scoring a run in each of the last four innings to take a 14-4 victory.
Kelly and Lyons each picked up two hits for the Bison, who had seven hits as a team. The Mountain Hawks picked up 15 hits overall in the victory. Bucknell used four pitchers, with seniors Renn Lints and Luke Allain each making an appearance for the Bison out of the bullpen on Senior Day.
Game Two: Lehigh 3, Bucknell 2.
The Bison dropped another close game in game two despite a sensational outing by Tyler O'Neill, as the first-year tossed a career-best 13 strikeouts. The 13 strikeouts for O'Neill were the most by a Bison pitcher since Connor van Hoose struck out 14 on March 31, 2018 against Army. Ultimately, it was the Mountain Hawks who prevailed, as the Bison offense was limited to just five hits in a pitcher's duel between O'Neill and Lehigh starter Matt Stamford.
Lehigh took an early lead in this one, as 2021 Patriot League Player of the Year Casey Rother hit his second home run of the doubleheader to left center to give the Mountain Hawks an early 1-0 lead.
O'Neill settled in shortly afterwards, however, as the first-year retired four of the next five batters he faced. In the third, O'Neill faced a bit of a jam, as a leadoff single by Chase Carlson and a walk to Jake Whitlinger put two on with nobody out for Lehigh. After the two initial baserunners, O'Neill struck out five of the next six batters he faced in escaping the jam and striking out the side in the fourth inning.
Lyons helped Bucknell strike back in the fourth, when his opposite-field double down the right field line allowed Sherwin to scamper home from second base and tie the game at one.
Bucknell had several chances in the game with the bases loaded, including loading the bags in the bottom of the fourth. A single by Grant Voytovich, a walk, and an error put the bases full for senior Logan Kellerman, but a hard-hit ball by the senior was just caught by Lehigh right fielder Rother.
The Mountain Hawks regained the lead in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Chase Carlson to make the game 2-1. The score would stay that way as both pitchers continued to shine until the bottom of the seventh when Mason Kelly reached on a strikeout wild pitch. A walk by Sherwin and a single by Kellerman loaded the bases, before Lyons was on hand again on a hard-hit ball to shortstop that allowed Kelly to score and tie the game at two. The Bison couldn't put another run across in the inning, however, with the Mountain Hawks ending the bases-loaded, one out jam with a 5-2-3 double play.
Lehigh took the lead for good in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by nine-hole hitter Carlson, his second hit of the day, plated Tyler Young for the go-ahead run. The Bison managed to get the tying run on first in the bottom of the ninth on a walk by Sherwin, but Rother closed the game on the mound for the Mountain Hawks to secure both games for the visitors.
Lyons managed Bucknell's only multi-hit day with two hits and two RBIs, while Voytovich, Corson, and Kellerman also added hits. O'Neill tossed another strong outing, with his final line comprising of eight innings, two earned runs, six hits allowed, and the 13 strikeouts.
Bucknell will conclude its series against Lehigh on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a single game set to be televised on ESPN+.
