Bucknell Baseball Rolls Past Navy, 11-1

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Bucknell University baseball team defeated Navy 11-1 on Wednesday evening to improve to 12-7 in Patriot League contests this year, and 16-19 overall. The Bison rapped out ten hits, three of which were home runs, while benefiting from an excellent outing by first-year lefty Ben Magovern in the victory.
Â
The Bison got on the board in the top of the second on a sac fly by Sean Keys, who has continued to be a solid presence in the lineup since Bucknell's victory over Lafayette on April 10. Keys brought home Jacob Corson, who singled earlier in the inning before being moved by a walk from Tyler Dunn and a sacrifice bunt by Brendan Lowery. Â
Â
The Bison added three more runs in the fourth to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Keys was involved once more, doubling to lead off the inning before Kyle Lyons brought the native of Centerport, N.Y. home from second on a single. Two walks later, Corson brought home Anthony Sherwin and Lyons on a two-RBI single to give Bucknell a four-run cushion.
Â
Magovern tossed one of his finest outings in his young career, keeping the Mids off the board until the fifth inning on a sac fly by Christian Policelli. Magovern's final line was six innings, three hits, and just one earned run with three strikeouts. The win for Magovern was the second of his career, with the other also coming against Navy on March 19. In 11 innings against the Mids this season, Magovern has allowed just seven hits and one earned run while striking out four.    Â
Â
Bucknell pulled away with six runs over three innings thanks to three home runs. However, the scoring was started by a single by Lyons, a walk by Sherwin, and an RBI single by Cannizzaro for Bucknell's first run of the sixth. Voytovich followed up Cannizzaro's hit with a home run to left center, the second of his career, to give Bucknell a commanding 8-1 lead. Â
Â
Cannizzaro then hit a home run of his own one inning later, before Corson knocked his second home run of the season in the eighth to put Bucknell at a 10-1 advantage. The Bison added one more run in the ninth thanks to a sac fly by Cannizzaro that scored Logan Kellerman, and Graeme Carroll and Nikhil Patel combined to allow just one hit over the final three innings in relief of Magovern as Bucknell secured a 4-1 regular-season record against the Mids. Â
Â
The Bison managed ten hits offensively, paced by a three-hit day from Corson with three RBIs. Voytovich and Cannizzaro also picked up three RBIs in the victory, as the trio combined to go 6-for-13 with nine RBIs and five runs scored. Lyons also enjoyed a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Â
Â
Bucknell will return home this weekend for its final home series in the regular season against Lehigh at Depew Field. The Bison will play a doubleheader against the Mountain Hawks on Saturday beginning at noon, before hosting Lehigh for a single game on ESPN+ on Sunday at 1 p.m. The baseball program will honor its eight-man senior class before game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Â
