BOSTON, Mass. – The Bucknell softball team opened its weekend series at Boston University on Saturday, dropping both games of the doubleheader to the Patriot League League leaders. The Bison struggled to produce runs while giving up seven in each game to the Terriers. With the loss, Bucknell fell to 1-5 in league play while Boston remained unbeaten at 5-0.
Bucknell's one run on Saturday came from a Zoie Smith home run in game one.
The Bison return to the BU Softball Complex on Sunday for the final game of the series.
Game One: Boston U. 7, Bucknell 1
Bucknell kept things scoreless through the first three innings of game one behind the efforts of Olivia Marinelli, who finished with four strikeouts and seven hits allowed before being replaced and receiving the loss. Boston broke the game open in the fourth inning with five runs before Smith was able to respond in the sixth.
The Terriers led off the fourth with a no-out double and scored on the next at-bat with a sacrifice bunt and a Bison error. Two more made it across on the first of four triples Boston hit on Saturday. Another triple and a single in the fifth made it a 5-0 deficit.
Smith's out-out solo homer in the top of the sixth was her first of the season and the seventh of her career. Bucknell also posted a single in the sixth but were unable to do any further damage.
Boston's first four batters in the bottom of the sixth posted hits, including back-to-back doubles that made it a 7-1 game.
Bucknell's Madison Roukey threw the final three innings and allowed seven hits and three runs. Boston's Lizzy Avery threw all seven innings and improved to 10-8 on the season with the win.
Makenzie Hilling went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game, and four other Bison added one hit each.
Game Two: Boston U. 7, Bucknell 0
Boston out-hit Bucknell 11-2 in the second game and did most of its damage in the third inning, posting four runs in that frame alone. Bucknell was retired in order in five of seven innings, as Allison Boaz threw seven strikeouts and pitched a complete game for the Terriers. Bucknell senior Kelly Toomey threw three innings, allowed five runs and received the loss, while Hunter Vestal came in to relieve and gave up a pair of runs.
Leading 1-0 already, Boston led off the third with a triple and proceeded to post six hits in the inning. Three of the runs scored with two outs in the frame.
The game went quiet for both teams in the fourth and fifth innings before a two-run Boston home run in the bottom of the sixth made it 7-0.
Nicole Rivait had both of Bucknell's hits, going 2-for-3 in the game.
