WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Bucknell softball team completed its second Patriot League series of the season with a 7-0 loss to Boston U. on Sunday, dropping the team to 0-3 on the weekend. The first-place Terriers led 9-2 in hits and scored six runs over the first two innings while limiting the Bison with a strong pitching performance from Allison Boaz.
The Bison threatened to score with a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the fourth, but they were ultimately shut out and fell to 1-5 in Patriot League play.
Boston's Boaz improved to 13-4 with the win after throwing all seven innings, and Bucknell's Kaiya Burton received the loss after going 1.2 innings and allowing three hits. None of the five runs that scored with Burton in the circle were earned.
The Terriers were on the board in the first inning before registering a hit. The first batter was hit by a pitch, the second was walked, the third reached on an error, and the leadoff hitter eventually scored on a passed ball.
Four hits, including a Boston triple, and another Bucknell error allowed five more runs to make it across in the bottom of the second. Burton was replaced in the middle of the second inning, bringing in Marinelli. The junior allowed one run on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Bucknell's batters were retired in order in each of the first three innings, and MaKenzie Hilling was the first Bison on base with a one-out infield single in the top of the fourth. Her hit was followed up with a Nicole Rivait single to left field, and both runners moved up on the next at-bat on a fielder's choice. Bucknell, however, was unable to capitalize on the situation.
The Terriers' seventh run came in the bottom of the fourth when they led off the inning with a single and a double, which prompted Bucknell to turn to Kelly Toomey in the circle. Toomey held Boston off the board the rest of the way, allowing just two hits in three innings pitched.
Bucknell saw just one more baserunner over the remainder of the game, as Hilling reached again on a walk in the top of the sixth.
The Bison return to action on Tuesday, April 5 with a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Becker Field against Saint Peter's. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.
