LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell softball team posted a massive 13-0 victory over the Saint Peter's Peacocks at Becker Field on Tuesday in non-conference action, as seven different Bison recorded RBIs and nine different Bucknell players accounted for 10 hits. It was the team's highest-scoring affair of the season and its third time holding an opponent off the scoreboard.
The Bison posted eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and tacked on five more in the third and fourth to end the game in the fifth. Kelly Toomey, who collected the win in the circle with her fifth complete game of the season, limited the Peacocks to just two hits on the afternoon. She threw five strikeouts and walked none in her fourth win this spring.
Four different Bucknell players posted multiple RBIs, including a team-high three by Nicole Rivait. Rivait knocked in all three with a home run in the bottom of the third.
Saint Peter's went through four different pitchers in the contest, and junior Christina Colon received the loss after giving up three runs in the first inning before being replaced. Bucknell's eight runs in the bottom of the first were the result of four hits, four walks and a Saint Peter's error.
The Peacocks' best chance at getting on the board came in the top of the first when they put runners on second and third with just one out, but Toomey's first strikeout of the day and a popup to third base put an end to the threat.
12 of Saint Peter's first 13 pitches in the bottom of the first were balls, and three of Bucknell's first four batters of the game were walked. The Bison then scored on singles by Chase Knapp, Juliette Basso and Annabella Hawkins, while two more made it across on a MaKenzie Hilling double.
After a scoreless second inning, Elena Horn was hit by a pitch to begin the the bottom of the third, and Hilling walked to set up Rivait's two-out, three-run homer to center field that made it an 11-0 game. It was Rivait's second home run of the season and the 12th of her career.
Saint Peter's failed to get a runner on base over the final two innings, and Toomey struck out three of the last six batters she faced.
Bucknell's final two runs in the bottom of the fourth were the result of triples by Knapp and Aguilar, a sacrifice fly by Hunter Vestal, and a Jessie Kincer RBI single to left field. It was Kincer's first RBI of her career.
In all, four of Bucknell's 10 hits went for extra bases, and the Bison walked six times on the day.
Bucknell returns to play this weekend with a three-game Patriot League series against the Army Black Knights. Bucknell is 1-5 in league play, while Army has played just one league contest and is 0-1. The series begins with a doubleheader at Becker Field on Saturday, April 9 beginning at noon.
