EASTON, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team went 1-1 in two road games at Lafayette in a battle of the top two teams in the Patriot League standings heading into the weekend.
Bucknell, now 11-13 and 7-3 in conference games, took game one 6-1 before falling to the Leopards by a score of 3-1 in game two.
Game One: Bucknell 6, Lafayette 1
A complete-game effort from Bucknell starter Will Greer gave Bucknell its first win of the series and helped improve the junior's record to 4-0 this season. Greer tossed seven innings for his first complete game of the season, and his sixth outing overall in which the Cohasset, Mass. native pitched at least six innings.
However, it was Lafayette who struck first in the game, capitalizing on two singles in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Bucknell responded in the third, when Grant Voytovich knocked a sharply-hit ball to the outfield with two outs that allowed both Anthony Sherwin and Kyle Lyons to score on the play and give Bucknell a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, Bucknell used three more runs to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Lyons and Sherwin were involved once more, with each of the two posting hits to open the inning. Sherwin singled home Lyons after his leadoff double, before a single by Corson allowed Sherwin to score. A fielder's choice by Tyler Dunn capped off the inning, when Voytovich touched home from second after an error in the Leopard infield.
The Bison rounded off the scoring in the game in the top of the seventh, when the duo of Lyons and Sherwin started the inning off once more, this time walking and hitting a single. A sac fly from Dunn then allowed the Bison to add one more run in the frame to take a 6-1 lead. Greer finished the job in the seventh, tossing his second career complete game in the win.
Sherwin and Lyons combined for five of Bucknell's six hits, as the duo went 5-for-6 with an RBI and five runs scored. Corson added Bucknell's other hit in the victory.
Game Two: Lafayette 3, Bucknell 1
The Leopards bounced back in game two, limiting the Bison offense to five hits, and just two through the first seven innings, in earning the split on the day. Bucknell struck out 18 times in the defeat, with 15 of those credited to Lafayette starter Jake Bloss in earning his second win of the season.
The two teams remained scoreless through the first four innings, as Bucknell starter Tyler O'Neill, one game after tossing a nine-inning complete game win, started off brightly for the Bison. The first-year scattered four hits through the first four innings, and limited the Leopards to just one run on a sac fly after the home team opened the inning by putting two runners on second and third with nobody out.
Lafayette added two runs in the sixth after an error in the Bison infield on an initial single put two runners in scoring position with two outs. That set up a big two-RBI single from Pete Ciuffreda, who brought both runners home to give Lafayette a 3-0 lead.
Bucknell found its offense in the eighth, managing to double its hits in that inning alone on a single by Lyons and a double by Voytovich. Lyons managed to score on Voytovich's hit after moving to second, but that was all the runs that Bucknell could manage to put across the plate in the inning in cutting the deficit to two, 3-1.
Bucknell put the tying run on first with one out in the ninth after a double from Brendan Lowery and an error, but two more strikeouts by the Leopards ended the Bison threat in earning the split.
Lowery and Voytovich each had two hits to pace the Bison offense, with the latter rapping two doubles in a game for the first time in his career. O'Neill's final line was seven hits allowed and just the one earned run with three strikeouts over five innings played.
Bucknell returns to action on Sunday with two games against Lehigh in Bethlehem. First pitch is scheduled for noon at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park.
