HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Bucknell softball team opened its weekend series at Colgate on Friday and battled in a back-and-forth affair in game two before ultimately falling to 0-2 on the day. The second game saw four lead changes before Colgate ended up with the 5-4 victory. Bucknell was held off the scoreboard in game one, losing 8-0 to the third-place Raiders.
Three Bison ended up with multiple hits on the day, and Annabella Hawkins accounted for two of the team's four RBIs. Kelly Toomey wound up with the loss in game one, and Olivia Marinelli was given the loss in the second game. Colgate totaled 21 hits over the two contests.
Bucknell returns to play on Sunday, April 17 for a noon game against the Raiders.
Game Two: Colgate 5, Bucknell 4
After a scoreless first inning, Bucknell and Colgate's second game of the afternoon saw the lead go back and forth over four consecutive innings. The Bison led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but the Raiders scored two more runs on back-to-back doubles to go on top for good. Colgate held a 13-7 advantage in hits in the game, while the Bison walked seven times.
Bucknell was on the board first in the top of the second after Smith led off the inning with a double. She would later be called out on a runner interference call between second and third, and another Bison runner was thrown out at home trying to score, but Bucknell racked up three walks in the inning. The third, by Hawkins, with the bases loaded sent Jessie Kincer across to make it a 1-0 Bucknell lead.
Colgate responded in the bottom of the second with a two-run homer. It was the Raiders' third home run of the day.
The Bison put a runner on with another walk in the top of the fourth, and three consecutive singles later Bucknell held a 3-2 advantage. It was Hawkins' single to right field that scored the go-ahead run and gave the sophomore her second RBI of the game. The lead wouldn't last long, however, as Colgate scored in the bottom half of the inning after a leadoff walk and two more singles before Bucknell could record an out.
Bucknell jumped in front once again in the top of the fifth following an Ava Aguilar single, a wild pitch and a Smith double down the left field line that made it 4-3.
Colgate's deciding two-run bottom of the fifth was the result of a Bison fielding error, a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and two doubles. Bucknell saw three more baserunners over the final two innings, including two in the top of the seventh, but it was unable to tie it up and extend the game.
Game One: Colgate 8, Bucknell 0
Chase Knapp posted Bucknell's only two hits in game one while two others reached on walks, as Colgate's Bailey Misken tossed six strikeouts in the five-inning shutout. Five of Colgate's eight runs came from two Adrienne Nardone home runs.
Nardone's two-run homer in the bottom of the second broke the scoreless tie, and she drove in three more with another homer in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-0 game. The Raiders added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth with a single and a triple to take the 8-0 lead.
Toomey allowed five runs before Madison Roukey entered the game. The Bison pitchers threw one strikeout apiece.
