BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 19 Lehigh outlasted the Bucknell men's lacrosse team, 13-12, on Sunday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
The Mountain Hawks (7-3, 5-0 PL) withstood a late Bison (7-4, 1-4 PL) rally to remain unbeaten in Patriot League action and clinch their spot in the Patriot League Tournament. Dutch Furlong factored into seven of Bucknell's goals, registering a hat trick and four helpers.
The Bison outscored Lehigh, 8-5, during the second half, also netting four of the game's final five goals to trim their deficit down to one. Two of Furlong's strikes came in the final three minutes of regulation, with the first just sneaking under the crossbar and the second coming in transition off of an Ethan Gyllenhaal feed after Drew Wellington picked off a clearing pass.
Furlong's last goal came with 42 seconds left to play, and Bucknell gained a man advantage thanks to a Mountain Hawk unnecessary roughness penalty. After Danny Striano came up with the ball following a lengthy faceoff scramble, the Bison called a timeout with 19.7 seconds remaining on the clock. Bucknell ultimately did not get a shot off, with Nick Turrini collecting the ground ball following a mistimed pass.
At halftime, Lehigh held an 8-4 advantage, bolstered by scoring four unanswered goals in the second quarter. During the opening frame, the teams traded scoring runs; after the Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 3-1 edge, the Bison netted three of the quarter's final four goals to make it a 4-4 game.
Beyond Furlong, Cam Doolan registered a hat trick while Reid Delanois filled the stat sheet with a game-high five caused turnovers and five ground balls. Bucknell used three different goalies, with Rich O'Halloran making 10 saves and Jack Van Slyke five. Van Slyke also sprung Gyllenhaal for a beautiful transition goal that came with six seconds left in the third quarter, giving the Bison momentum entering the final stanza.
For Lehigh, Tommy Schelling (4g-1a) and Scott Cole (3g-2a) each registered five points. All-American Mike Sisselberger, the 2021 Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Year, won 20 of 27 faceoffs and collected a game-best 15 ground balls. James Spence stopped 13 shots to earn the win.
The Mountain Hawks held slim leads in shots (44-42), shots on goal (28-25) and ground balls (43-35); they built a sizable 20-7 edge in faceoffs and went 2-for-3 on the extra man compared to Bucknell's 1-for-5. The Bison frustrated Lehigh in transition, forcing the team into eight failed clears; overall, they caused the Mountain Hawks to cough up the ball 19 times.
This was Bucknell's second-straight loss by a single goal to a nationally ranked opponent. The previous week, the Bison were edged by then No. 13 Army West Point, 10-9. All four of Bucknell's losses to date came to foes who appeared in at least one of the two national polls at the time of their meeting.
The Bison next host Holy Cross on Sunday, April 17 at 12 p.m.
