PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bucknell University women's water polo team concluded its regular season with a narrow 8-6 loss to Brown on Sunday morning in its final test before hosting the CWPA Championship beginning on April 22.
Boati Motau put the Bison ahead in the fourth with a goal on an assist from Paige Furano, 6-5, but the Bears scored three straight goals to end the game in taking an 8-6 win.
Neither team led by more than two in the entirety of the game in a back-and-forth contest. It was Brown who struck first on a goal from Zoe King in the first quarter, but Furano drew an exclusion on Bucknell's next possession in setting up a powerplay opportunity in which Isabelle Monaghan promptly converted on a pass from Chloe Smith.
Brown's King gave the home team a 2-1 lead after the first period on another goal, but Monaghan responded once more in the second, this time on a pass from Bella Moynihan, to tie the game again.
That pattern continued as the second went on, with Brown once more taking a one-goal lead before Emma Molaski scored the first of her two goals on the day on an assist from Furano to tie the game at three heading into halftime.
Two straight goals from the Bears to start the third separated the teams by more than one goal for the first time in the contest, but Bucknell responded with goals from Furano and Molaski to tie the game at five to end the third.
Motau gave Bucknell its first lead of the game on an assist from Furano shortly after the opening sprint of the fourth, but that was the last the Bison would get on the scoresheet as the Bears closed the game with three unanswered goals.
Molaski and Monaghan each scored twice in the defeat, while Sam Gove earned the start at goalkeeper, making four saves. The Bison will have several weeks to prepare for the CWPA Championship held in Lewisburg, with first-round games scheduled to start on Friday, April 22.
