Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison are coming off back-to-back one-sided home wins over Robert Morris and Duquesne, and now they head on the road to face St. Bonaventure on Saturday in Olean, followed by a neutral-site game against Campbell on Monday at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in the Baltimore area.
- Bucknell is 2-1 on the season, with all three games coming at home. The Bison were scheduled to play at Binghamton on Feb. 19, but that game was postponed due to icy field conditions.
- The Bison were strong in all phases of the game in the two recent wins over Pittsburgh-area squads. Bucknell outscored Robert Morris and Duquesne 33-13 and outshot them 79-42.
- Bucknell's 45 goals through three games are the second-most in team history. The 2008 squad scored 46 in its first three contests against Long Island (17), American (9), and Lafayette (20).
- The Bison claimed three Patriot League Player of the Week citations after the win over Robert Morris, which was an NCAA Tournament team a year ago after winning the Mid-American Conference. Katie Wendell set career highs for goals (4) and points (6) and was named Offensive Player of the Week. Abby Neff matched her career high with seven ground ball on the way to Defensive Player of the Week honors. And Goalie of the Week Symone Ryans made 11 saves on the way to her first career victory.
- Laurel McHale paced the offensive attack against Duquesne with four goals along with an assist. Freshman Allie Boyce recorded her first career hat trick, classmate Carly Cenci logged three assists, and Wendell and Colleen Kelly tallied two goals apiece. Defender Eva Macris assisted on back-to-back goals in the third quarter, accounting for her first two career points.
- Bucknell dominated the draw controls against the Dukes, piling up an 18-8 advantage. Ella Payer tallied a career-high eight DCs.
- Caitlin Tucker returned to the goal crease against Duquesne and made eight saves. The Bison defensive unit limited the Dukes to only four goals through three quarters and snapped a seven-game series losing streak to them.
- McHale leads the team with 10 goals, and she ranks third in the Patriot League with 3.33 goals per game and 4.67 points per game. Wendell (7-5-12), Tatumn Kohlbrenner (8-2-10), Boyce (6-0-6) and Emma Cashwell (2-4-6) are other top scorers. Kohlbrenner is 5-for-5 on free-position attempts this season.
- Payer leads the Patriot League in caused turnovers per game at 2.67 and ranks fifth in draw controls at 5.33 per game.
- The Bison went 3-6 during an abbreviated 2021 spring season. The wins came over Lafayette, American, and Colgate, all at home.
- Bucknell was picked to finish eighth in the Patriot League preseason poll. Loyola was tabbed the preseason favorite, followed by Navy, Army, Lehigh, Boston University, Colgate, Holy Cross, Bucknell, American, and Lafayette.
- The Bison returned nine starters, including three of the top four scorers and the bulk of the defensive unit, from last year's squad.
- Seniors Cashwell and Macris, along with junior Payer, have been named captains for the 2022 season. Macris is in her second year as a captain.
- Payer is Bucknell's lone returning All-Patriot League selection. She earned the honor as a sophomore after leading the team with 24 draw controls while playing strong defense. Midfielder Mason Rode, who graduated last spring, joined Payer on the All-PL Second Team.
- Senior attackers McHale and Wendell are the top returning scorers. McHale tallied a team-high 18 points on 11 goals and seven assists last season, while Wendell logged five goals and a team-high 12 assists.
- Head coach Jackie Dando is in her third season as Bucknell's head coach. Each of the first two were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, however. Former Colgate star Haley O'Hanlon and Veronica John have joined the staff as assistant coaches.
- The Bonnies are off to a tough start at 0-4, and they have been outscored 62-26 by Youngstown State, Akron, Pittsburgh, and Colgate.
- The first three of those games were on the road, and then St. Bonaventure dropped its home opener to Colgate 16-6 on Feb. 26.
- Abby Hiltz leads the team with 10 points on five goals and five assists. Kassi Hogan and Rebecca Howe have four goals apiece.
- Ashley Herrick has started three of the four games in goal, tallying 31 saves with 56 goals against. Hayley McIntyre got the start against Akron and made 13 saves in a 6-5 loss.
- St. Bonaventure finished 2-10 last season, but one of those wins came at Graham Field. The Bonnies won 11-10 in overtime on a goal from then-senior Ashley Easterday. Bucknell's Emma Cashwell scored with 13 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Laurel McHale and Caroline Walsh also scored two goals apiece.
- St. Bonaventure was picked to finish 10th in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll.
- Bucknell is 2-6 all-time against St. Bonaventure, with the wins coming in 2009 (21-16) and 2013 (17-9). This is Bucknell's first trip to Olean since a 15-13 loss in 2012.
- Campbell is 1-2 on the season and will play at Old Dominion on Saturday before continuing up to Maryland for the game against Bucknell on Monday.
- The Camels are looking to bounce back from a wild 22-20 loss at Elon on Wednesday. That was the highest-scoring game in team history. Prior to that, Campbell defeated Stetson 19-8 and lost at Davidson 16-13, which gives the team 52 goals in three games.
- Sam Bischoff leads the team with 12 goals and 15 points thus far. She is coming off a six-goal game against Elon after recording hat tricks against Stetson and Davidson. Other top scorers include Megan Matthews (6-5-11), Ally Heath (9-0-9), Julianna Sanchez (8-0-8), and Rasa Welsh (2-5-7). Â
- Sanchez has a team-high 25 draw controls, as Campbell has outdrawn its opponents 53-52 on the season.
- Goalkeeper Emma Strickland has 28 saves while allowing 46 goals thus far. She had 10 saves against both Stetson and Davidson.
- Campbell finished 8-7 overall and 5-1 in the Big South last season. The Camels dropped a 15-14 decision to Radford in the Big South Tournament semifinals.
- Bucknell and Campbell have met just once previously, a 13-10 Bison away victory in 2020. Tegan Warren tallied four goals for the Bison in that game, while Morgan Steinhacker had three. Mackenzie Kolesar led Campbell with three goals. Bucknell lost to Furman three days later, and then the remainder of the season was canceled due to the pandemic.
- After the Campbell game, Bucknell will be off until the following Saturday, March 12, against UMBC at Graham Field. Bucknell will then host Binghamton on March 16 in a makeup of the previously postponed contest, before heading to Navy for the start of Patriot League play on March 19.Â
