LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team cruised past Colgate, 14-6, on Saturday night at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium at the Pascucci Family Athletics Complex.
The Bison (7-2, 1-2 PL) used a 14-save performance from Rich O'Halloran, and five-point efforts from Connor Davis and Dutch Furlong, to dispatch the Raiders (2-5, 1-3 PL) on a brisk night punctuated by periods of heavy rain late in the contest.
Bucknell held Colgate to six or fewer goals for the first time since 2011; that season, the then No. 12 Bison dispatched the then No. 16 Raiders, 10-3, in the Patriot League Championship game.
At halftime, Bucknell held an 8-2 advantage, bolstered by scoring five unanswered goals from the first quarter's 2:30 mark to the second frame's 1:04 mark. Notably, the Bison netted three of those goals in a two-minute window near the second quarter's end.
Colgate snapped a 29:27 scoring drought by capitalizing on a man advantage with 8:14 on the clock in the third quarter. After the Raiders scored again at the third quarter's 7:13 mark, Bucknell responded exactly one minute later with a Harry Wellford goal that kicked off a 3-0 run that put the game out of their reach.
Davis and Furlong's five points each came on a hat trick and two helpers. Two of Furlong's goals came in a six-second stretch in the first quarter; the first strike came in transition while the second came off of a clean Nick Crovatto faceoff win. Furlong's second assist was one for the highlight reels; while falling to his back after being pushed by a defender, he found Davis for a goal with 9:11 left to play in regulation.
Beyond Davis and Furlong, Wellford (2g-1a), Jack Feda (2g) and Crovatto (1g-1a) enjoyed multi-point outings. Crovatto also went 12-for-23 in the faceoff x and paced all players with nine ground balls.
Bucknell's suffocating defense was led by Travis Talarico, who caused two turnovers and collected four ground balls. Frankie Higgins added a game-high three caused turnovers and two ground balls while Danny Striano contributed seven ground balls. O'Halloran matched his career-best total in saves, set a game earlier in his first career start at then No. -/20 Loyola.
For Colgate, Brian Minicus netted a game-high four goals. Thomas Colucci went toe-to-toe with Crovatto, winning 11-of-24 faceoffs and collecting four ground balls. Matt LaCombe finished with 15 saves.
The Bison led in shots on goal (29-22), ground balls (35-24) and faceoffs (13-11) while the Raiders held a slight edge in shots (42-40). Colgate turned the ball over 20 times and went 1-for-5 on the man advantage.
Bucknell next hosts No. 16 Army West Point on April 2 at 1 p.m. During halftime, the Bison will recognize the 2001 Patriot League Championship team.
