Bucknell Women’s Lacrosse Wins Second Straight, 16-7 over Duquesne
3/2/2022 8:34:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior Laurel McHale scored four goals, freshman Allie Boyce notched her first collegiate hat trick, and senior Katie Wendell had a four-point showing to lead a big night for the Bucknell attack unit in a 16-7 rout of visiting Duquesne at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium.
The Bison won their second straight laugher to get to 2-1 on the season, while the Dukes fell to 2-3. Including Saturday's 17-6 home win over Robert Morris, Bucknell has won its last two contests by a combined 33-13. That is the team's top two-game scoring output in two years, when the Bison opened the 2020 season with 34 goals in consecutive wins over Sacred Heart and Binghamton.
Bucknell led this one just about wire-to-wire. After Boyce opened the scoring just 51 seconds into the match, Duquesne tallied the next two goals from Tina St. Clair and Alana Piano to take its only lead of the night. Colleen Kelly tied it up from the 8-meter arc, igniting a 7-0 scoring run for the Bison.
McHale scored twice in a 47-second span to give the Bison a 5-2 lead after one quarter. Freshman Carly Cenci made a beautiful feed on the latter goal. After McHale hit the pipe with a shot, Cenci nabbed the ground ball in traffic and fed it right back to her on the crease for the finish.
Duquesne cut an 8-2 deficit to 8-4 with back-to-back goals late in the second quarter, but Tatumn Kohlbrenner scored a big one for the Bison to break up that momentum. Her tally with 1:03 to go gave Bucknell a 9-4 lead at intermission.
The Bison blew the game wide open with a dominant third quarter. They outshot the Dukes 10-2 and outscored them 6-0 in that frame. Bucknell's transition game was key in that surge, with defender Eva Macris assisting on back-to-back tallies from Emma Cashwell and Kelly to make it 12-4. Those were the first two career points for Macris.
By the time McHale scored two in a row late in the period, Bucknell had a 15-4 lead to send the game into running clock.
While the Bison offense was clicking for most of the night, they were just as stout defensively and on the draw circle. Bucknell had an 18-8 edge in draw controls, with junior Ella Payer pocketing a career-high eight. Cashwell was strong in the center and collected three of her own, and Kohlbrenner added three more.
Defensively, the Bison limited the Dukes to only four goals through three quarters – they scored three in the fourth with a bevy of substitutes in the game – and 18 total shots. Bucknell harassed Duquesne into 19 turnovers.
Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Tucker tallied eight saves en route to her first win of the season, with four of those stops coming in the first quarter.
St. Clair, Piano, and Sam King scored two goals apiece for Duquesne. Goalies Rachel O'Toole (8) and Mady Piersielak (4) combined for 12 saves.
Bucknell had been 2-10 all-time against Duquesne, with the Dukes winning the last seven meetings between 2008-14 by an average margin of 8.6 goals. Bucknell's last win over Duquesne was an 11-9 verdict in Pittsburgh in 2007.
