CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Bucknell softball team dropped a pair of games Friday at the Chatty's Patty's Tournament, hosted by Tennessee-Chattanooga. The Bison saw a late rally fall short in a 5-4 loss to Southeastern Louisiana, then fell 9-0 to the host Mocs later in the evening.
The Bison will take on the same two teams again on Saturday, facing Southeastern Louisiana at 10 a.m. before wrapping up their Spring Break week against Chattanooga at 3 p.m.
Southeastern Louisiana 5, Bucknell 4
Nicole Rivait hit her first home run of the season and the 11th of her career to make it a one-run game in the seventh inning, but Southeastern Louisiana's KK Ladner retired the final two batters to secure the 5-4 win for the Lady Lions (16-8).
It was a scoreless affair through three innings before the Lady Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth. RBI doubles from Lindsey Rizzo and Aeriyl Mass around a run-scoring bunt single from Cam Goodman accounted for their first three runs, and then Blaire Bizette connected on a two-run homer one inning later.
The Bison pulled within 5-2 in the sixth thanks to RBI singles from Sarah Baluch and Juliette Basso. Rivait and Chase Knapp started the rally with the first two of four straight singles. Bucknell still had runners at second and third with no outs, but Alyssa Romano escaped further damage by inducing two ground balls to first base followed by a foul out.
Rivait and Basso both tallied two hits apiece for the Bison, who finished with seven in the game. Ladner (2-1) started and finished the game in the circle for Southeastern Louisiana, allowing two runs on three hits over six innings. Kelly Toomey (3-8) was charged with three runs on four hits in 3.2 innings for Bucknell
Chattanooga 9, Bucknell 0 (5 inn.)
Chattanooga (14-12) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and seven in the third en route to the five-inning win.
Olivia Lipari hit a two-run homer to get the Mocs on the board in the opening inning, and she followed with a two-run bloop single in the third. Gracey Kruse provided the dagger with a two-out grand slam.
The Bison (3-18) had just threatened in the top of the third. Singles by Elena Horn and Ava Aguilar and a walk to Rivait loaded the bases with one out, but Brooke Parrott (8-1) induced two infield popups to extinguish the rally.
Olivia Marinelli (0-3) started in the circle and worked two innings for the Bison.
