CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Bucknell softball wrapped up the Chatty's Patty's Tournament at Tennessee-Chattanooga on Saturday, falling 11-2 to Southeastern Louisiana and 5-0 to the hosting Mocs. The two games concluded Bucknell's spring break trip down south and its tournament portion of the schedule.
Bucknell returns to Lewisburg to gear up for its Patriot League and home opener next weekend. The Bison will host Holy Cross for three games, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 26.
Game One: Southeastern Louisiana 11, Bucknell 2
Senior Sarah Baluch and rookie Bella Radican both took advantage of a Lady Lions error in the bottom of the third inning to score a pair of runs on the same play, but it was the only damage the Bison were able to deal as Southeastern Louisiana raced to an 11-2 victory on Saturday morning in Chattanooga.
The Lady Lions posted a run in the first, three in the second and seven in the third to hand Bucknell its third loss of the weekend. Southeastern Louisiana out-hit Bucknell 12-2 en route to the victory.
Sophomore Hunter Vestal started the game but faced just nine batters before the Bison tested Kaiya Burton, Olivia Marinelli and Madison Roukey in the circle against an 18-8 Lady Lions team.
Bucknell's two runs came after Radican reached on a one-out walk and a Rivait hit-by-pitch. Chase Knapp walked one batter later, and the two runs came home during the next at-bat following a fielding error at second base.
11 of Southeastern Louisiana's 12 hits occurred during the first three innings where it scored each of its runs. Rivait and Knapp posted Bucknell's only hits of the game.
Game Two: Chattanooga 5, Bucknell 0
Bucknell finished even in hits with the Mocs in its second game of the day, but a grand slam in the bottom of the first left the Bison in a hole that they were unable to climb out of. All five of Chattanooga's runs came from a pair of home runs.
Kelly Toomey started the game in the circle for the Bison and went four innings before being replaced by Burton. Both pitchers finished with a strikeout, and Burton didn't allow a hit over the final two frames.
After the Bison were retired in order in the top of the first, Chattanooga's first four batters reached base successfully thanks to a pair of Bucknell errors, a single and a walk. Bucknell made a play at the plate on the second error to preserve the 0-0 tie, but Chattanooga's Kaili Phillips sent four runs across during the next at-bat with a homer to left field.
The Bison hit singles in each of the next three innings, but they were unable to string anything together.
The Mocs added a fifth run in the bottom of the fourth when Phillips led off the inning with another home run to center field.
Rivait, Basso, Smith and Radican all posted hits in the loss.
