LEWISBURG, Pa. – In a wide-open game that featured 30 goals and 72 shots, it was visiting Binghamton that took control with an 8-0 run bridging the first and second quarters on the way to a 20-10 decision over Bucknell on Wednesday afternoon at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium.
Tatumn Kohlbrenner tallied two goals and two assists, and Emma Cashwell had two goals, an assist, and six draw controls to lead the Bison (3-4), who dropped their third straight game on the heels of a three-game winning streak.
Binghamton, which already had 10-goal wins over Colgate and Lafayette from the Patriot League, improved to 4-4 on the season. Emily Masera had a five-point day with four goals and an assist, and Kenna Newman and Jesse Barer tallied three goals apiece.
Bucknell was looking good early, as back-to-back goals from Cashwell and Laurel McHale gave the hosts a 2-1 lead after only four minutes of play. The McHale goal on a cut to the crease off a nice feed from Kohlbrenner would be Bucknell's final goal for a span of 19:34, however, as Binghamton rattled off the next eight in succession.
Binghamton led 12-4 at the half after scoring seven times in the second quarter, including two in the final 39 seconds.
The Bearcats extended that margin to 15-4 before the Bison settled in and played them evenly the rest of the way. Katie Wendell, Taylor Kopan, and Kohlbrenner all scored in a 2:29 span late in the third quarter to make it 15-7, and Allie Boyce, Kohlbrenner, and Emily Baird tallied in the fourth.
Binghamton outshot Bucknell 40-32 and led 16-13 in ground balls. The Bison finished with a narrow 17-16 edge in draw controls, with Cashwell and Ella Payer both corralling a half-dozen apiece. Eva Macris led the defense with three caused turnovers.
Both teams finished with 11 saves. Emily Manning went the distance in goal for Binghamton, while the Bison used all three goalies. Caitlin Tucker was the most effective with eight saves and eight goals against in the second half.
The Bison now turn their focus to Patriot League play, and they will start with a tough road test against 17th-ranked Navy on Saturday in Annapolis, Md.
