Women’s Lacrosse Routs Robert Morris for First Victory of 2022

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior attacker Katie Wendell logged four goals and two assists to help the Bucknell women's lacrosse team to a resounding 17-6 victory over defending Mid-American Conference champion Robert Morris on Saturday at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium.
Now 1-1 on the season, the Bison were playing for the first time in two weeks after last Saturday's game at Binghamton was called off due to icy field conditions. The Bison were raring to go in this one, piling up a 17-4 shot advantage in the first quarter. Bucknell's 3-1 lead after 15 minutes might have been even wider if not for 10 first-quarter saves from Robert Morris goalie Jamie Keller. But two Colonials netminders combined for only four more saves the rest of the way as the Bison ran away with their largest victory margin since a 23-0 blanking of Howard early in the 2019 season.
Wendell recorded career highs for goals and points, with two of her tallies helping to stake the Bison to that first-quarter lead. Tatumn Kohlbrenner, who scored a career-high four goals in the season-opener against Canisius, added three more to her ledger. Laurel McHale, Allie Boyce, and Amy Roche all scored twice apiece as nine different Bucknell players registered a goal, and 12 had at least one point.
While the ball was zipping at the offensive end, Bucknell's defense also turned in a stellar performance, led by senior Abby Neff with a career-high-tying seven ground balls. That total is one shy of the team record of eight, held by seven different players.
The Bison defensive unit held Robert Morris to 24 total shots, and only once all day did the Colonials score consecutive goals. That was a two-goal flurry in 62 seconds that cut Bucknell's lead to 10-6 late in the third quarter, but the Bison finished the game on a 7-0 run over the final 16 minutes.
Junior goalie Symone Ryans was a big part of the defensive effort. Ryans went the distance with 11 saves and only the six goals against in her first appearance of the season and second of her career. She also tallied 11 saves against Army last season in her only other start.
Jenna Irwin scored three goals, and Jordan Anderson had two goals and an assist for Robert Morris, which went 14-3 overall and 10-0 in the MAC last season. The Colonials, who were picked to repeat as MAC champions in 2022, fell to Notre Dame in their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance last spring.
A big sequence in the game came late in the first half, when Bucknell was able to stretch a 6-3 lead to 8-3 by intermission on goals from Roche and Wendell. Emma Cashwell then opened the second-half scoring just 1:42 in to make it a 9-3 game.
Bucknell outscored Robert Morris 6-0 in the fourth quarter on goals from six different players. Colleen Kelly, Boyce, McHale, Kohlbrenner, Wendell, and Phoebe McLeod all scored within a 10-minute span to break the game open.
Bucknell finished with a 42-24 shot advantage and a lopsided 31-10 edge in ground balls. The Colonials led 15-12 in draw controls but had 19 turnovers. The Bison were 0-for-5 on free-position shots in the first quarter thanks to the strong early play from Keller, but they were 5-for-7 the rest of the way.
Bucknell is right back in action at home on Tuesday against Duquesne at 5 p.m. The game can be seen on ESPN+.
