The Bison are off to their first 4-0 start since 2007
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team toppled Marist, 15-7, on Saturday afternoon at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
The Bison (4-0, 0-0 PL) cruised past the Red Foxes (1-4, 0-0 MAAC) behind Dutch Furlong's seven-point outing, Nick Crovatto's strong day in the faceoff x and a suffocating effort by their defense.
Bucknell began to pull away from Marist during the second quarter, netting four of its five goals to carry a 7-2 edge into the intermission. The Bison broke open the game in the third frame, outscoring the Red Foxes by a 7-2 margin to build what proved to be an insurmountable 14-4 advantage.
From 12:00 in the second quarter to the third quarter's 12:35 mark, Bucknell strung together a 6-0 run. During that stretch, Alston Tarry completed his hat trick with two goals in 28 seconds while Furlong struck twice and assisted on one of Tarry's tallies.
Furlong's career-best seven points came on five goals and two assists; his five goals also represent a new career-high total. Tarry finished with four goals while freshmen Connor Davis (3g) and Cam Doolan (2g-1a) contributed three points apiece.
Davis's hat trick brought his season goal total to 19; he has netted at least three goals in every game, topping out at a program freshman record six against both Mercer and St. John's.
Crovatto was again exceptional in the x, winning 17 of 24 faceoffs and collecting a game-high 13 ground balls; he finished one ground ball shy of the school standard he matched during Bucknell's previous game against St. John's. He also caused two turnovers, tied for first among Bison with Reid Delanois.
Max Nolan picked up his fourth-straight win in net, stopping nine shots. Davis, Delanois and Furlong each collected five ground balls, helping Bucknell finish with an overall advantage of 53-21. The Bison also led in shots (53-31) and shots on goal (37-16).
For the Red Foxes, Jason Intermesoli registered a goal and two assists while Jojo Pirreca twice found the back of the net. Dylan Bedell logged five ground balls while Anthony Novellano made an impressive 22 saves.
Bucknell's 4-0 start is its best since 2007; that season, the Bison won their first five games en route to an 11-4 overall record.
Bucknell received votes in this week's USILA Coaches' and Inside Lacrosse Media Polls. The Bison next return to Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday, March 5 for a 1 p.m. tilt with Binghamton.
