Men’s Lacrosse off to 5-0 Start after 17-11 Win over Binghamton
3/5/2022 4:41:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Connor Davis continued his scoring assault with his third six-goal game of the season, and sophomore Dutch Furlong recorded five goals and seven points for the second game in a row, lifting the Bucknell men's lacrosse team to a 17-11 victory over Binghamton on Saturday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
The victory was Bucknell's fifth straight to start the season, marking just the fourth 5-0 start in team history. The Bison won their first five games in 2007, their first seven tilts in 1970, and all 12 of their contests in 1996.
Bucknell needed only 13 seconds to get on the board in this one, as Danny Striano fed Alston Tarry for a quick goal. That duo would go on to have big afternoons, as Tarry logged a goal and four assists, while Striano recorded two assists, three caused turnovers, and a career-high-tying eight ground balls.
Binghamton tallied the next two goals to take its only lead of the day, but back-to-back tallies from Davis just 35 seconds apart gave the Bison a 3-2 lead after one period.
Bucknell scored the first four of the second quarter, all coming in a span of less than three minutes, to stretch the margin all the way to five at 7-2. Nick Crovatto, who had another strong game at the faceoff X, tallied the third of those four goals when he picked up a rebound of a saved shot in tight quarters and fired it home for his second tally of the season. Crovatto went 17-for-26 with eight ground balls on the day.
The Bison led 9-5 at the half, but the Bearcats (1-3) made things interesting by scoring the first two goals of the third period to pull within two. Freshman Cam Doolan scored perhaps the biggest goal of the day for the Bison, when he darted straight to the goal from the right flank and scored with a low shot to halt Binghamton's momentum.
Furlong scored off a Doolan feed 31 seconds later, and those two goals ignited an 8-1 Bucknell run that put the game away. The Bison led 14-8 after three quarters, with Furlong delivering a terrific feed to a cutting Matthew Barkauskas for the final goal of the stanza with 15 seconds remaining.
Davis scored his fifth and sixth goals of the day around a Furlong strike early in the fourth, and by that point the Bison had run their lead all the way up to 17-8.
Davis, who started the day ranked second in the nation in goals per game, now has 25 goals in just the first five games of his career. His six-goal game ties his own Bucknell freshman scoring record.
Barkauskas scored twice in the game, and second-line middie Brenden Lundy handed out three assists.
Bucknell used three goalies in the game. Starter Max Nolan made seven saves while conceding eight goals, and Rich O'Halloran had a strong 17-minute stretch with four saves and three goals against. Jack Van Slyke finished up the final 1:31.
Bucknell piled up a 56-38 shot advantage and is now averaging 47.8 shots per game on the season. The Bison won the ground ball battle 39-25 and the faceoffs 20-12.
Binghamton goalie Teddy Dolan made 18 saves. Kevin Winkoff and Andrew Arce scored three goals apiece for the Bearcats.
