BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team split two games at Lehigh on Saturday afternoon. Bucknell dropped the first game 7-4, before a dominant pitching performance from sophomore Will Greer helped Bucknell take the second game of the day, 3-1.
Bucknell, now 9-17 and 9-13 in PL games this year, will finish the series against the Mountain Hawks on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Depew Field.
Game One: Lehigh 7, Bucknell 4
Bucknell found itself in a 5-0 deficit after five innings, but pulled four runs back in the sixth to draw within one. However, Lehigh added three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to pull away and take a 7-4 win in the first game of the day.
Bucknell started slowly offensively in this one after posting a season-best 14 hits in its last outing against Navy. The Bison faced Preseason Pitcher of the Year Mason Black, who kept the Bison hitless through the first three innings.
Lehigh took a 1-0 lead on a sac fly in the first, and added one more run in the fourth on a single up the middle by Riley Davis. The Mountain Hawks then used a three-run fifth to seemingly take control of the seven-inning contest in taking a 5-0 lead after five.
However, Bucknell managed to work itself back into the game in the top of the sixth after Peter Marren and Kendall Pierson reached on a single and a hit by pitch. Logan Kellerman then walked with two outs to load the bases and set up reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Caleb Broughton, who continued his hot streak with a bases-clearing double to right center as the Bison managed to find some offense on Black, who had only allowed two hits entering the inning.
Anthony Sherwin then singled home Broughton as Lehigh elected to change pitchers to cut the Mountain Hawk lead to 5-4.
That was the closest the Bison would get, as the Mountain Hawks responded with a two-run sixth and retired the Bison in order in the seventh to take the win.
Marren, who entered the game amongst the league leaders in average, added two more hits and a runs scored, while Broughton went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Broughton has hit safely in his last six appearances, and has eight hits in his last three outings.
Austin Odell earned the start for Bucknell on the day, pitching a season-high four innings in the defeat.
Game Two: Bucknell 3, Lehigh 1.
Bucknell found the win in game two thanks to a complete-game outing from sophomore Will Greer, who allowed just three hits in keeping the Mountain Hawks at bay as Chris Cannizzaro plated the go-ahead, RBI single in the eighth to give Bucknell the lead for good.
In a nine-inning contest that lasted just around two hours, the pitching staff of both teams excelled through the early goings. The two teams combined to allow just five hits through the first seven innings as starters Greer for the Bison and Luke Rettig for the Mountain Hawks each had fine outings.
The Bison started promising, continuing their fine scoring record in the first inning this season after Cannizzaro tripled on a full count before being brought home by Marren on a sac fly in the opening frame.
Lehigh tied the game in the fourth on an RBI double by Joe Gorla, who brought Gerard Sweeney home from first after the latter was hit by a pitch. However, Greer managed to strike out the next Lehigh batter in three pitches to keep the game tied at one.
Bucknell managed the go-ahead run in the eighth, with Cannizzaro once again playing a huge part. The junior singled home Jacob Terwilliger, who doubled with two outs one batter prior.
After Greer pitched a clean eighth inning, the Bison added one more insurance run in the ninth. A two-out single by Brendan Lowery started things off, before the speedy Kyle Lyons singled on a bunt. Anthony Sherwin then singled home Lowery for Bucknell's third run in taking a 3-1 lead.
Lehigh did manage to get two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Greer managed to retire Gorla in this instance, ending the game on a pop up to first base.
The complete game for Greer is the first of his career, and the second by a Bison this season after Chris DiFiore pitched a complete seven-inning game against the Mountain Hawks 12 days earlier. Greer is the first Bison to pitch a nine-inning complete game since Connor Van Hoose tossed a complete game win against Army in the Patriot League Semifinal Series on May 12, 2018.
Cannizzaro tied his career high with four hits, a feat that he has accomplished three times this season. Lowery also had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored for his first multi-hit outing since March 1, 2020 vs. NJIT.
Bucknell will finish its series against the Mountain Hawks on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Depew Field.
