LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team battled into the late innings of both games against Lehigh at Depew Field on Saturday, but eventually dropped both contests to open the weekend series 0-2. The Bison lost 6-3 in game one, then were edged 9-8 in game two after trailing by five into the bottom of the ninth.
Eunsang Yu batted .375 (3-for-8) with three RBIs, two doubles and a home run in one of the better Bison performances on the day, while Jacob Terwilliger and Brendan Lowery each knocked in a pair of runs.
Bucknell moved to 5-15 (5-11 PL) with the losses, and Lehigh improved to 12-7 (9-2 PL).
The Bison are scheduled to play a third game against the Mountain Hawks on Sunday, April 11 in Bethlehem, Pa.
Game One: Lehigh 6, Bucknell 3
The Mountain Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first game with a two-RBI double before both teams went scoreless over the next four innings. Bucknell posted hits in the second, third and fourth innings, but couldn't string enough together to make a mark on the scoreboard until the sixth inning.
Three Lehigh hits in the top of the sixth increased the deficit to four, but the Bison responded in the bottom half with four hits and two runs to cut it to a 4-2 Lehigh lead. After Peter Marren walked with one out, Yu hit his first career home run that accounted for two of his three RBIs on Saturday.
The Mountain Hawks added two more runs in the top of the seventh on three hits to put a four-run difference between the two teams. With two outs in the bottom of the final inning, Marren walked again and was once again sent across after Yu doubled to left field. The Bison were unable to make up the final three runs.
Austin Odell made the start on the mound and went four innings while allowing four hits and striking out seven. Brenden Tuttle came in to relieve and struck out eight.
Game Two: Lehigh 9, Bucknell 8
The Bison trailed throughout game two as well and were down by as many as seven at one point, but rallied over the final two innings to make it a one-run game. With two away and a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh, Terwilliger sent a ball to center field that would have tied the game were it not grabbed for the final out.
After Lehigh took a 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first two innings, an Anthony Sherwin single in the bottom of the third cut the deficit to one. Scoreless innings in the fourth, fifth and sixth were followed by a five-hit, five-run seventh for Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks added another in the eighth, putting the Bison in an 8-1 hole heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Yu, Terwilliger and Jake Wortman all doubled in the bottom of the eighth to score three runs and cut Lehigh's lead to four. Lehigh added another run in the top of the ninth before Bucknell put together its strong half inning of the day in the bottom of the ninth. Bucknell doubled three more times and scored four runs in the ninth, making it six doubles and seven runs over the final two. In all, Bucknell posted 13 hits in game two.
Will Greer went the first 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits and striking out three. Graeme Carroll finished out the game and struck out three while giving up six hits.
