BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Bucknell University baseball team took an 8-2 win over Lehigh on Monday afternoon to halt a seven-game skid, and improve to 2-2Â in road contests against Lehigh, who leads the South Divison with a 9-4 record. Â The Bison used a four-run fourth inning to take an early lead, and the stellar pitching of starter Chris Difiore and reliever Anthony Casciola combined to strike out 11 batters in the victory. Â
Bucknell improves to 6-15 with the win, and 6-11 in conference games.
The Bison managed to get on the board first after a double play ball in the top of the third allowed Anthony Sherwin to touch home after the Bison loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch with no outs. Â Â
Bucknell then extended its lead in the fourth to 5-0, all with two outs. Â Logan Kellerman walked, before a single by Jacob Terwillliger and a walk by Sherwin loaded the bases once again for the Bison. Â Chris Cannizzaro then walked to score one run, before a passed ball by the Mountain Hawks added one more run for the Bison. Â Jacob Corson then doubled to right field to score Sherwin and Cannizzaro as Bucknell took a commanding 5-0 lead. Â
After the Mountain Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, Bucknell added two insurance runs in the top of the fifth on a sac bunt by Brendan Lowery, who made his second start of the season at second base, before Terwilliger tripled home Kellerman for Bucknell's other run. Â
An RBI groundout by Cannizzaro in the eighth gave Bucknell a six-run advantage, which proved to be plenty as Difiore provided another quality outing.  The sophomore from Mount Kisco, N.Y. pitched at least six innings for the fourth consecutive game, throwing seven innings in today's contest while scattering seven hits and allowing just the two runs.  Difiore also struck out eight batters, a career best, while throwing 115 pitches.  Casciola replaced Difiore in the eighth, and shut down the Mountain Hawks the rest of the way, not allowing a Mountain Hawk baserunner and striking out three batters in the process. Â
Terwilliger matched his career high with three hits, while Corson and Cannizzaro each picked up multiple RBIs. Â Lowery has now picked up RBIs in back-to-back games after a two-RBI peformance on Saturday against the Mountain Hawks. Â
Bucknell will take on Navy on Saturday in a doubleheader before hosting the Mids on Sunday, April 18 at 2 p.m. for a single game. Â
