LEWISBURG, Pa. – Behind Tommy Sopko's nine-point outing, the Bucknell men's lacrosse team raced past Cleveland State, 15-9, on Sunday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Sopko, a senior attackman, was sensational for the Bison, who returned to competition for the first time since February 29, 2020. Sopko set a new career high with nine points on seven goals and two assists; he finished two points and two goals shy of the Bucknell standards in those statistical categories, set by Will Yorke in the program's most recent game against Marist.
The Bison, who held a 7-3 halftime lead, broke open the game in the third quarter. They outscored the Vikings (0-2) by a 6-2 margin to extend their advantage to 13-5, effectively putting the game out of reach.
Beyond Sopko, Harry Wellford netted a hat trick while Alston Tarry contributed two goals and a helper. Brenden Lundy added two goals, the first of his collegiate career, while transfer Tanner Germain netted his first goal as a Bison.
Nick Crovatto and Danny Striano led Bucknell with five ground balls, with Bryant Boswell and Travis Talarico scooping up four apiece. Boswell also caused four turnovers while Talarico caused three for a staunch Bison defense.
Ben Clark made seven saves to earn the win. Daniel Parson entered the game with less than five minutes remaining in regulation and made his first career stop.
Bucknell held advantages in shots (41-32), shots on goal (29-17), ground balls (38-34) and faceoff wins (13-12). Notably, the Bison held the Vikings scoreless on seven man advantages, including a three-minute power play at the start of the second quarter.
For Cleveland State, Kevin Sobey turned aside 14 shots, many at point-blank range. Michael Wilson filled the stat sheet with a goal, two assists and four ground balls. Evan Moskwa had a strong outing in the faceoff x, winning 12 and scooping up five ground balls. Entering the final frame, the Vikings held a 12-7 edge in faceoff wins; Bucknell won all six of the fourth quarter's faceoffs.
The Bison next host Lehigh on Sunday, March 14 at 12 p.m. The game will be their 2021 Patriot League opener.
