LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's lacrosse team was clipped by St. Bonaventure, 11-10, in overtime on Saturday at Graham Field.
The Bonnies (1-2) capitalized on a man advantage to net the golden goal less than two minutes into bonus time to spoil the Bison's (0-1) season opener. For Bucknell, Katie Wendell was the breakout player, registering a career-high five points on a goal and four assists. Entering the contest, she had four career points (3g-1a).
The Bison forced overtime on an Emma Cashwell goal with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Laurel McHale drew the St. Bonaventure defense and then found an open McHale in front of the net for the equalizer. Cashwell and McHale's heroics were set up by Julia Bradbury, who picked off a Bonnie pass with 39 seconds left on the clock to give Bucknell another offensive possession.
While the Bison carried the momentum into overtime, they were stymied by a pair of yellow cards. One was assessed with eight seconds remaining in regulation, the other in the first minute of bonus time. The Bonnies' golden goal was scored by Ashley Easterday off of a Nora Anderson feed; Easterday had a wide-open look at the Bucknell net due to St. Bonaventure's advantage in numbers.
Throughout the game, the teams traded scoring runs. After the Bonnies opened the scoring, the Bison rattled off four unanswered goals to build a 4-1 lead. St. Bonaventure closed the first half on a 4-0 run to carry a 5-4 advantage into the intermission; the Bonnies then netted the second half's first goal to take a 6-4 edge.
The Bison regrouped, tying the game at 6-6 with a pair of goals scored in a 22-second window. St. Bonaventure then scored three of the next four goals to take a 9-7 advantage, which Bucknell erased on Wendell and McHale strikes at the 4:59 and 4:12 marks. Maddie Mazur gave the Bonnies a 10-9 lead with 1:41 left on the clock, which was ultimately answered by Cashwell.
Beyond Wendell, McHale (2g-2a), Cashwell (2g-1a), Caroline Walsh (2g) and Kali Peeples (2g) had multi-point efforts for the Bison. Wendell filled the stat sheet, adding two ground balls, two draw controls and one caused turnover.Â
Lauren Kinnee made nine saves, adding a team-best five ground balls. Peeples, Tatumn Kohlbrenner and Ella Payer all logged three draw controls, helping Bucknell build a 16-7 advantage in this statistical category.
The Bison also led in shots (37-32) and shots on goal (23-20); the Bonnies led in ground balls (23-18) and capitalized on 5-of-11 free-position attempts compared to Bucknell's 2-of-8 showing.
For St. Bonaventure, Courtney Fox netted four goals while Ashley Herrick turned aside 13 shots, many at point-blank range. Emily Mahon tied Kinnee for the game high with five ground balls.
