LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team put together a strong afternoon at the plate on Saturday, as they batted .344 as a team and scored 18 runs to defeat Army twice in the first of two doubleheaders scheduled for this weekend.
The Bison pitched a 4-0 shutout in game one before racing to a 14-5 victory over the Black Knights in game two. With the wins, Bucknell improved to 3-5 on the season and 2-3 in Patriot League play. Army moved to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Bucknell returns to Depew Field on Sunday for another doubleheader against the Black Knights, with game one scheduled to begin at noon.
Game One: Bucknell 4, Army 0
Senior pitcher Brenden Tuttle posted a spectacular afternoon on the mound for the Bison during Bucknell's series-opening shutout win. Over 6.2 innings of work, the senior allowed eight hits and no runs while striking out seven to collect his first win on the rubber this season.
On offense, Bucknell put the work in early to build a 4-0 lead by the end of the third inning. Junior Chris Cannizzaro went 2-for-3 at the plate, and senior Peter Marren and sophomore Henry Novicki each finished with RBIs.
Once Tuttle retired the Black Knights in order in the top of the first, rookie Jacob Corson reached on a single to wake up the bats for the Bison in the bottom half of the inning. Cannizzaro then singled to move Corson to third, and a Marren sacrifice fly knocked him home. A batter later, Novicki doubled to give Bucknell a 2-0 lead heading into the second.
Army managed just one hit in the second, while Bucknell tacked on another run thanks to a Logan Kellerman single and a passed ball that allowed him to score two batters later. Corson reached again in the third inning on an error and later scored while the Black Knights were turning a double play at second and first.
Bucknell didn't score again in the seven-inning game, but more runs weren't needed as Tuttle held Army at bay through the remainder of the contest. Tuttle was replaced by junior Andrew Funovits with one out to go in the game.
Game Two: Bucknell 14, Army 5
The tone was set for the second game in the bottom of the first inning, where the Bison yielded seven runs on three hits in 14 at-bats. Bucknell scored its first run before tallying a hit in the inning, as Army hit two batters and walked two more in the first five at-bats. Bucknell also scored runs off a Grant Voytovich RBI single, a wild pitch, a balk, and two more singles from Corson and Cannizzaro.
Army finally broke its scoreless drought in the second inning, scoring two, but the Bison added two of their own on a Jacob Terwilliger triple that scored a pair and gave Bucknell a 9-2 lead.
The Bison made it an even 10 runs on an Anthony Sherwin sacrifice bunt in the fourth, and the lead would sit at eight until the bottom of the sixth when Sherwin knocked in two more with a single to left field. Bucknell pushed its scoring total to a season-high 14 runs in the bottom of the seventh, and while Army scored three more times, the Bison had built a big enough lead to coast through the rest of the game.
In all, four Bucknell pitchers saw work on the mound in the second game, with Will Greer collecting the win on six innings pitched and five strikeouts. Greer improved to 2-0 on the season, while Graeme Carroll, Connor Vucovich and Theo Farynick each received an inning.
Terwilliger finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Other notable numbers include a 3-for-5 outing at the plate with two RBIs for sophomore Jake Wortman, and a trio of RBIs for Sherwin
