BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bucknell rebounded from a walk-off defeat in game one vs. Lehigh with a 4-3 win in game two to earn a split in two narrow games as Patriot League play opened up on Saturday afternoon.
Bucknell, now 1-4 on the young season, has now played in four games decided by one run this season.
Game One: Lehigh 5, Bucknell 4.
Bucknell managed a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but an RBI single from Lehigh's Gerard Sweeney helped the Mountain Hawks take a walk-off win over the Bison for the third time in the last four games played in Bethlehem.
Bucknell took a 2-0 advantage in the first inning after Caleb Broughton led off the inning with a single on an 0-2 pitch before a triple from first year Jacob Corson brought the senior home. Chris Cannizzaro, who himself hit three triples in two games against La Salle last weekend, then used an RBI groundout to score Corson and give Bucknell an early lead.
The Bison kept Lehigh off the scoreboard until the fourth inning, when Joe Gorla used a sac fly to score Sweeney and halve the Bison advantage. Key to stymying the Lehigh offense was starter Brenden Tuttle, who provided another solid outing with five innings pitched while allowing two hits and striking out 11. The 11 batters struck out easily surpassed Tuttle's previous career best of seven, and the senior only allowed the one earned run as he was relieved in the sixth by Chris Difiore.
Bucknell extended its lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning after both Peter Marren and Henry Novicki scored on consecutive passed balls by the Mountain Hawks after reaching on a hit by pitch and a walk, respectively.
However, Lehigh responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to cut the Bucknell lead to one entering the final inning of the seven-inning contest.
Those runs proved critical as the Mountain Hawks managed to plate the tying run on a double by Eric Cichocki before Sweeney scored Tyler Young for Lehigh's third win of the season. The defeat was Bucknell's third of the season when holding a lead in the seventh inning or later.
Bucknell managed five hits as a team, with hits each from Broughton, Corson, Cannizzaro, Marren, and Eunsang Yu.
Game Two: Bucknell 4, Lehigh 3
Bucknell managed to hold on in game two as the Mountain Hawks once again threatened to come from behind. The Bison carried a 4-0 lead entering the bottom of the ninth, but back-to-back strikeouts by Andrew Funovits, who earned his first save of the season, helped the Bison hold on for their first victory of 2021, 4-3.
Bucknell once again looked comfortable in the early goings, thanks to an impressive pitching performance by sophomore Will Greer. The native of Cohasset, Massachusetts pitched a career-high seven innings and threw 109 pitches, scattering five hits and striking out eight to keep the Mountain Hawks off the board.
Bucknell, which didn't manage a hit until the top of the seventh, managed to take a 1-0 lead in that frame thanks to its first hit of the game. Corson started the proceedings with a single, before stealing second. Marren moved the first year to third on a single of his own, before Corson touched home on a fielder's choice with Henry Novicki.
Bucknell added another run in the eighth when the Bison loaded the bases with two outs. A passed ball by Lehigh allowed Jacob Terwilliger to score from third after he doubled earlier in the inning to double Bucknell's advantage, 2-0.
Bucknell's final two runs came in the top of the ninth after an error by Lehigh allowed both Novicki and Marren to score.
Lehigh managed to pull within one in the bottom of the ninth, as a two-RBI double by Andrew Nole and a sac fly by Cichocki pulled Lehigh within a single run with one out. However, Funovits, who entered in the eighth inning, managed to escape the situation much like he did in Bucknell's win over Virginia last season with two strikeouts to end the game.
Bucknell managed three hits in the game with Marren, Terwilliger, and Corson each picking up a hit. Greer added another solid pitching performance to follow up his five-inning, five strikeout outing against La Salle last weekend. Funovits earned his first save of the year after striking out five in two innings.
Bucknell will host the Mountain Hawks for a single game on Sunday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
