Bucknell Baseball Drops Wild Extra-Innings Affair to Lehigh, 17-10

Peter Marren and Logan Kellerman both logged three hits and three RBIs for the Bison, while Jacob Corson also had a three-hit day to continue the strong start to his freshman season. Bucknell used seven pitchers in the game, and middle relievers Jacob Terwilliger and Anthony Casciola were bright spots, combining to yield one earned run over 7.2 innings while striking out 10.
Casey Rother went 4-for-7 to pace Lehigh's 13-hit attack, and it was his double over the third base bag that broke the tie in the top of the 12th. Riley Davis drove in three runs for Lehigh, and leadoff hitter Eric Cichocki reached base six times, four via hit by pitch.
Those were four of the 16 hit batsmen by both teams in the game, which shattered the NCAA record. The previous mark was 14 by Kent State (9) and Oakland (5) on Apr. 1, 2014. The 11 batters hit by Bison pitchers was also an NCAA record, and Cichocki fell one shy of the individual record for most times hit in one game. Longtime Major Leaguer Carlos Quentin of Stanford was plunked five times in a game by Florida State in 2002.
Bucknell got out to a great start in this one. After starter Tyler Rigot stranded a runner on third in the top of the first, the Bison exploded for five runs in the bottom half. Caleb Broughton started the rally with a leadoff double, Corson singled and Chris Cannizzaro was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Marren plated a run with an infield hit, and Eunsang Yu and Kellerman both added two-run singles. For Kellerman, a transfer from Furman, it was his first hit as a Bison.
The lead did not last long, however, Lehigh shot right back with eight runs in the top of the second. The frame started with five straight hits and then three straight hit batsmen. Adam Retzbach drove in the go-ahead run on a ground out, and two more came across on a passed ball and a sac fly to make it 8-5.
That's when Terwilliger and Casciola settled things down for the Bison. Terwilliger, a sophomore infielder, make his first appearance on the mound for Bucknell and gave up just an unearned run on three hits while striking out six over 3.2 innings. He entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the third, and he got out of the jam when Gerard Sweeney skied to right field and the runner scoring from third was called out on appeal for leaving too early.
Terwilliger struck out Sweeney to strand two runners in the top of the fifth, and that proved big as the Bison rallied to tie the game with a couple of big two-out hits in the bottom of the frame. With men at first and second, Cannizzaro hit a grounder up the middle that was smothered by the Lehigh shortstop behind the second base bag. Kyle Lyons, who had earlier reached on a bunt single, came all the way around from second base on the infield hit, and both runners moved up on the throw to the plate. Marren then shot the right-center gap for a two-run triple, tying the game at 8-8.
An infield hit and an error put Mountain Hawks on the corners to start the sixth. Terwilliger came back with consecutive strikeouts and then was one pitch away from getting out of the inning unscathed, but on a 1-2 pitch Davis hit a little chopper over the mound and beat it out for an infield hit and an RBI.
Bucknell responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Henry Novicki was hit by a pitch to start the rally, he went to second on a wild pitch, to third on Anthony Sherwin's bunt single, and home on Kellerman's infield hit. Two batters later, Corson knocked in Sherwin for a 10-9 Bison lead.
Lehigh tied the game in the seventh on Rother's RBI single, but that would be the only blemish for Casciola, who conceded only two hits over four innings while fanning four.
Lefty Matt Stamford (1-0) was even better for Lehigh. He came in with one on and one out in the seventh and went the rest of the way without giving up a hit or a walk. In Stamford's 5.2 innings, the only Bucknell base runners came on a pair of errors by Lehigh infielders.
Brendan Lowery reached on a throwing error to start the 10th. He advanced to second on a sac bunt and a fly ball, but Stamford tallied one of his seven strikeouts to end the threat.
Freshman Bryce Reimer replaced Casciola to start the 11th and pitched a 1-2-3 frame, including a couple of strikeouts. Reimer ran into trouble in the 12th, however, as Sweeney led off with a booming triple to deep center field, followed by Rother's double into the left field corner. Lehigh managed only one more hit in the inning but tacked on six more runs.
It was a tightly contested weekend series between these two teams. Bucknell and Lehigh split two one-run games in Bethlehem on Saturday before playing 12 innings on Sunday. The Bison and Mountain Hawks will play another three-game set Apr. 10-11.
Next up for the Bison is a four-game home series against Army. The teams will play doubleheaders next Saturday and Sunday at Depew Field.
