Third-Quarter Flurry Sends Cornell to 4-2 Win over Bucknell Field Hockey

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Caroline Ramsey recorded a hat trick and Cornell used a three-goal flurry in the final four minutes of the third quarter to turn back Bucknell by a 4-2 count in a non-conference field hockey game on Sunday afternoon at Graham Field.

Emily Doyle notched her second goal of the season and Noor Kaur tallied the first of her career for the Bison (6-6), who dominated the first half only to see Cornell (7-4) come alive in the second half on three goals off penalty corners and another one on penalty stroke.

Doyle gave the Bison a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the second quarter. Kari Melberger sent the ball toward goal and Doyle was there to tip it past Cornell goalkeeper Aerin Park.

Bucknell conceded only one shot and just one penalty corner in a strong defensive performance in the opening half. The Big Red did not get a shot on goal until 6:33 into the third quarter, when Clara McCormick turned aside a shot from Meadow Maguire.

With just over four minutes remaining in the third, Olivia Friedberg carried the ball along the end line and fired a shot into the pads of a prone McCormick. Friedberg's momentum took her over McCormick and then to the ground, and a penalty stroke was awarded.

Julia Darmo stepped up to the spot and converted the stroke to knot the game at 1-1.

Cornell was not finished scoring in the third quarter, however, as Ramsey scored twice on penalty corners just 1:59 apart, the latter coming with no time remaining in the period.

Trailing 3-1 into the game's late stages, the Bison threw all kinds of pressure into the Cornell circle and were rewarded with a penalty stroke of their own with 3:23 to play. But Park came up big for Cornell, lunging to her right to deny Mackenzie Kile.

That proved big when the Bison cashed in on a penalty corner with 1:48 to play. M.K. Stefanowicz's initial drive was saved by Park, but the inserter Kaur was there on the doorstep to clean up the rebound.

The Bison pulled McCormick for an extra attacker, and with 58 seconds to play Ramsey finished her hat trick, once again converting on a penalty corner with a shot that glanced in off the stick of a defender. Ramsey now has 13 goals in just 11 games for the Big Red.

Bucknell finished with a 16-7 shot advantage and a 9-4 edge in penalty corners. McCormick made two saves for the Bison, while Park had eight for Cornell.

The Bison have now dropped four straight, but all coming against top-notch competition in Harvard, No. 25 American, No. 4 Penn State and Cornell, with the first three coming on the road.

Bucknell returns to Patriot League play next Saturday with a key battle against Lehigh at Graham Field at 11 a.m. The game can be viewed live on ESPN+
