CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Bucknell softball limited Virginia to just four runs through 14 innings but fell 2-1 in both of Tuesday's games at Palmer Park in Charlottesville, Va. With the losses, the Bison fell to 8-12 on the season.
Bucknell heads to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday for a doubleheader against George Washington. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., and both will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Game Two: Bucknell 1, Virginia 2
The Cavaliers had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh tied at 1-1 when they scored on an error to defeat the Bison in walk-off fashion. Senior pitcher Raeanne Geffert nearly got the Bison out of the jam by getting the out at home, but an overthrow to first base in an attempt to end the inning allowed the next runner to score.
Virginia hadn't scored since the first inning, where three consecutive singles put the Bison down by one. Bucknell tied the game during the third when Allyse Volpe reached home thanks to a Virginia error. Volpe had made her way around the bases after hitting a single up the middle, then advancing with a steal and another error.
Bucknell nearly took the lead during the fifth inning when it loaded the bases with two outs but couldn't knock one in.
Volpe was one of three Bison to record hits in the game, joining Jess Hom and Lauren Lichtenwalner. Bucknell put most of its runners on base with walks, including three by sophomore Nicole Rivait. Nine Bucknell baserunners were stranded throughout the game.
Geffert was handed the loss and moved to 5-8 on the season. She struck out two and earned one run.
Game One: Bucknell 1, Virginia 2
Similar to the second game, the Cavaliers took an early lead with back-to-back hits in the first inning that put the Bison down 2-0. The game went scoreless over the next four innings until the Bison cut the deficit in half in the sixth. A Taylor Wolfgang single up the middle scored Rivait, who had reached second after being hit by a pitch and stealing.
It looked like Bucknell might tie the game in the top of the seventh when Halie Mariano led off the inning with a double. Tara Baglivo entered the game to pinch run and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, but Sarah Baluch was caught stealing second two batters later to end the game.
Wolfgang's and Mariano's hits were Bucknell's only two in the contest for the Bison, and two reached on walks. Freshman pitcher Kaiya Burton went the distance and gave up five hits with one strikeout. Her record moved to 3-3 this spring.
