WASHINGTON, D.C. – Bucknell softball posted 16 combined hits in its two games against George Washington on Wednesday, but the Colonials won both by a single run at the GW Softball Field in Washington, D.C. Seven of Bucknell's losses this season have come by one run, and three of its losses have come during extra innings.
Taylor Wolfgang finished the day with a team-best three hits and three RBIs, and Raeanne Geffert totaled eight strikeouts.
Bucknell heads back to North Carolina this weekend to compete at the Elon Softball Cardinal Invite. The Bison will face both Elon and Maine twice. The first game against Elon is set for 4 p.m. on Friday, March 9.
Bucknell 3, George Washington 4 (8 Innings)
Bucknell went to extra innings for a third time this season tied 3-3 with the Colonials in game two. After leading off the bottom half of the eighth inning with a triple, George Washington used a sacrifice bunt to push the winning run across.
Bucknell led through the first three and a half innings of the game and held the Colonials scoreless during that time.
The Bison added one run in the first when a Wolfgang single to left field scored Volpe, who led off the game with double. Wolfgang produced two more RBIs in the fourth inning with a two-run home run over the left field fence. The 3-0 lead was the largest by any team throughout the day.
The Colonials tied the game with three runs off four hits in the bottom half of the fourth, at which point Geffert came in to relieve Kaiya Burton. Burton had allowed just one hit until that inning and walked no batters.
Volpe joined Wolfgang with two hits, and six other Bison each recorded one hit in the game.
Bucknell 2, George Washington 3
George Washington held the lead throughout the first game, scoring all three of its runs in the first inning.
Bucknell responded well with two runs in the second. The Bison strung together three consecutive hits, beginning with a Wolfgang single to leadoff the inning. Halie Mariano knocked her in during the next at-bat with a double to right center, then a Marisa Alemany single scored Mariano.
The Bison spent the rest of the game trying to find the tying run, and nearly got it when they put two runners on with no outs in the sixth.
Geffert pitched all six innings and allowed four hits while striking out six.
