CARY, N.C.--   The Bucknell University baseball team split a doubleheader against NJIT in a series that was moved south due to inclement weather in Central Pennsylvania. Bucknell took an 11-7 win in game one, before falling 14-2 in game two.Â
Game One: Bucknell 11, NJIT 7
A 13-hit effort by the Bison helped Bucknell score 11 runs or more for the second time in the past three games after a 14-10 win over Virginia in game three in Charlottesville last Saturday.Â
The Bison had big production from the middle of the order, as Tyler Wincig, Chris Cannizzaro, JohnPaul Bell, and Peter Marren each picked up multiple hits and RBIs in the game.Â
After falling behind 2-0, a bases-loaded walk by Cannizzaro helped the Bison halve the NJIT lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third. Bucknell then added three runs in the fifth, highlighted by RBI singles from Bell, Marren, Alex Baumann in three straight at-bats.Â
Tyler Wincig gave the Bison three important insurance runs in the seventh, as his three-run shot over the left field fence scored Kyle Lyons and Brendan Lowery to extend the Bucknell lead to 7-2.Â
After an RBI single by Eunsang Yu in the seventh plated Marren to extend the Bucknell lead to five, 8-3, the Highlanders fought back in the top of the eighth. NJIT scored four unanswered runs in the inning to pull within one, 8-7, in the frame.Â
However, Bucknell put the game away with a three-run bottom of the inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Cannizzaro, an RBI triple from Bell, and an RBI single from Marren in three straight at-bats as Bucknell held on for an 11-7 win over the Highlanders to avenge a loss in extra innings in Cary earlier this year.Â
Nate Grisius (2-1) earned the win for the Bison on the mound after going 6.1 innings while allowing two hits, three earned runs and striking out 10 batters, a career-high.Â
Â
Game Two:Â NJIT 14, Bucknell 2Â
The Highlanders scored seven runs combined in the second and third innings en route to a 14-2 win over the Bison in game two. The Bison were limited to just three hits, and committed three errors.Â
Bucknell took a 1-0 lead in the first after Evan Madigan managed to steal home after some heads up base-running, but NJIT used a three-run second and a four-run third to pull away from the Bison early on. Kendall Pierson managed Bucknell's second run of the day after scoring Bell on an RBI groundout, but the Highlanders added five runs in the fifth en route to a 14-2 win over the Bison in the second game of the doubleheader.Â
Bell, Marren, and Brendan Lowery notched Bucknell's three hits on the day. Jack Simpson (0-3) was charged with the loss for the Bison.Â
Bucknell will return to action on Sunday at 10 a.m. for the final game of its three-game series against NJIT. Â
