About the Bison
- Bucknell is coming off a 1-3 weekend at ACC powerhouse Virginia, taking game three in the series in a 14-10 slugfest.
- The win by the Bison over Virginia was their first since 1925, and improves Bucknell's record to 2-24 all-time against the Cavaliers.
- Bucknell notched its most runs since a 14-1 win over Niagara on March 1, 2019, and earned its first victory over an ACC School since a 16-12 win at Wake Forest on Feb. 14, 16-12.
- The 14 runs scored by the Bison was just the fifth instance of scoring 14 or more runs since the 2015 season. The Bison managed to accomplish the feat three times in 2015 (W, 16-12 vs. Wake Forest, 2/14), (W, 17-4 vs. Buffalo 2/28), (W, 14-1 vs. Army (4/12).
- Freshman Jake Wortman notched a big game in the win, as the freshman from nearby Fredericksburg, Virginia, about an hour and a half from Charlottesville, went 3-for-5 from the plate with five RBIs in being named Patriot League Rookie of the Week.
- Wortman's biggest moment of the win was his three-run home run, the first of his career, that gave Bucknell a 9-2 lead in the sixth inning. The freshman then singled up the middle in the seventh to score JohnPaul Bell and Tyler Wincig for two more RBIs.
- Overall, Wortman hit .444 (4-for-9) in three games over the weekend with six RBIs and an on-base percentage of .615.
- Kyle Lyons also had a solid weekend, posting four hits with two runs scored and an RBI. Lyons pulled the Bison within one in a narrow 6-5 defeat in the bottom of the ninth on Friday with a fielder's choice after beating out a potential double play throw to extend the inning for Bucknell.
- Peter Marren also posted a career-best three hits in game three, while Madigan notched two runs scored and drew three walks.
- Chris Cannizzaro enjoyed another solid weekend, including back-to-back home runs in games two and three, including a three-run shot in Bucknell's lone victory. The sophomore from Staten Island leads the team and the Patriot League in RBIs with 10 this season, and has four extra-base hits.
- Cannizzaro and Tyler Wincig both rank tied for first in the Patriot League with seven runs scored so far this season.
- Andrew Funovits earned his first save of the season, and the third of his career with two big strikeouts. The Cavaliers had the bases loaded with the tying run at the plate after pulling within four in the bottom of the ninth.
- 27 of Bucknell's 42 runs this season have come in the sixth inning or later, including ten runs in a two-inning span in the sixth and seventh in game three against the Cavaliers.
- Senior Josh Hunter recorded his first career hit, an RBI double, in game two against the Cavaliers. The Virginia series also marked the collegiate debuts of freshmen Nick Christopher and Jacob Terwilliger, as well as the first career starts of freshmen Will Potdevin and Alex Markopoulos, the latter starting his first collegiate game just 25 minutes from his hometown of Crozet, Virginia.
- Bucknell's matchup against NJIT on Feb. 16 was the first in the history of the two schools, an 8-5 victory for the Highlanders in Cary, N.C.
- Evan Madigan had a solid game for the Bison as Bucknell rallied from three down in the eighth to tie the game at five before losing in extra innings. The senior shortstop went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs, including the eventual game-tying RBI double that plated Alex Baumann.
- Wincig also added two hits on the day.
- NJIT will enter the series having taken two of three from Longwood in Farmville in their lone series since the win over the Bison, scoring 37 runs over a three-game span.
