Freshman Henry Novicki was the star of the day for the Bison with three hits and five RBIs, including his first collegiate home run. Tyler Wincig went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, and JohnPaul Bell, Peter Marren and Brendan Lowery drove in two runs apiece.
Luke Longo, the NJIT 8-hole hitter, went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, and Julio Marcano delivered three hits and drove in five. David Marcano also had three hits, and five Highlanders scored three runs.
NJIT broke open a 2-1 game with a five-run top of the third inning. The Highlanders led 8-3 after six innings, and then the game really got wild. NJIT exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth, but Bucknell answered with nine in the bottom half to pull within 15-12. The Bison just could not keep NJIT off the basepaths, however, as the visitors separated once again with six more runs in the eighth and two in the ninth.
Bucknell sent 15 hitters to the plate in that nine-run seventh inning. Singles from Wincig and Chris Cannizzaro and a two-run double from Bell got the rally started. Novicki, who had already hit a solo homer to right-center in the second, drove in two more with a single. Lowery hit a sac fly, Kyle Lyons doubled and later scored when Wincig's fly ball was dropped in left field. Marren and Jake Wortman later added bases-loaded walks to bring in the eighth and ninth runs of the frame.
Marren and Novicki had RBI singles in the ninth.
Brenden Tuttle started and was the first of seven pitchers deployed by the Bison. Matt Shobe was the most effective, allowing just one run and one hit over two and two-thirds innings. Wincig did double duty as the final pitcher of the day, and three of the four outs he recorded came via strikeout.
Now 3-8 on the season, the Bison will be back in action next Friday through Sunday for a three-game set against Villanova in Winter Haven, Fla.
