WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Bucknell University baseball team couldn't overcome an early deficit in an 8-2 defeat to Villanova on Friday afternoon to kick off five games in the Sunshine State over the next five days.
Bucknell (3-9) drops its third-straight game with the defeat.
Villanova took an early 2-0 lead after an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk allowed the Wildcats an early advantage.
Bucknell responded with a run in the bottom of the frame after back-to-back singles from Evan Madigan, one of three for the senior shortstop on the day, and Tyler Wincig put the Bison in a good spot with nobody out.
The two then advanced a bag on the bunt single by Wincig after a throwing error by the Villanova infield. A fielder's choice by Chris Cannizzaro then allowed the Bison to score their first run of the day, but Bucknell couldn't bring any more runners across with one out in the inning as the score remained 2-1 after one frame.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the top of the second after back-to-back errors by the Bison allowed the Wildcats to score two in the inning to take a 4-1 lead in the top of the second.
Villanova pulled away in the fourth with four runs. Ryan Toohers hit a two-run home run for the Wildcats, while a sac fly and an RBI double to right center provided the other two runs for Villanova.
Matt Shobe entered the game in the fifth for the Bison in relief of starter Jack Simpson, and got out of a tough jam after the Wildcats had managed runners on first and second with one out. After a double steal, Shobe managed a pop up to short and a strike out to end the inning.
Bucknell added its other run in the bottom of the eighth after Henry Novicki, who enjoyed a breakout five-RBI game the last time out against NJIT, knocked a double to right field to score JohnPaul Bell.
Bucknell had its best chance to get back in the game in the bottom of the ninth as an eight-pitch walk from Kyle Lyons, a single from Madigan, and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with nobody out.
However, Bucknell couldn't manage to get a run across as it fell for the third straight game, 8-2.
Shobe and Nicholas Sadd provided solid relief outings, combining to strike out three batters in 4.2 innings played while allowing just one hit between them. Madigan led the way for the Bison with three hits, while Bell and Novicki each added two hits on the day. Jack Simpson (0-4) was charged with the loss for the Bison.
Bucknell will take on the Wildcats in the second game of their three-game set with Villanova on Saturday at 1 p.m.
