LEWSIBURG, Pa. – Jadyn Matthews shook loose on a breakaway and converted the lone goal of the game in the 57th minute, sending unbeaten Cornell to a 1-0 verdict over Bucknell on Friday evening at Emmitt Field.
In a tightly played game where both defenses held strong throughout, Bucknell finished with a 10-9 edge in shots and a 5-2 lead in corner kicks. But it was the Big Red finding the goal they needed to improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Bison fell to 1-4, with the four losses coming against teams that are a combined 10-4-3 on the season. Three of those four were one-goal setbacks.
Gabby Bair had a decent look at a header that skipped wide of the post early in the first half, and then 90 seconds into the second, Sarah Hazard played in Bair along the right side of the area, but her shot skimmed off the crossbar.
Cornell cashed in about 10 minutes later, when Matthews collected a long ball out of the back from Evanthia Spyredes, found space beyond a Bison defender and fired home her second goal of the season.
Bucknell nearly countered moments later after a nice buildup in the attacking third, but Cornell goalkeeper Nicole Shulman was well-positioned to make a save on Jenna Marek.
The Big Red protected their lead well over the final eight minutes, keeping the Bison pinned in their own end for much of that stretch.
Shulman finished with four saves for Cornell, while Kaylee Donnelly had two saves for Bucknell.
The Bison are back in action on Sunday at Towson at 1 p.m.
