About the Bison
- The Bison women's soccer team has two games on the docket this weekend. Bucknell and Cornell will meet for the first time since 2011 when the Big Red come to Emmitt Field on Friday, and then the Bison travel to Towson on Sunday looking to extend a three-game series winning streak against the Tigers.
- Bucknell starts the week with a somewhat deceiving 1-3 record. After opening the season with an overtime win over Robert Morris, the Bison have lost 1-0 to Pittsburgh out of the ACC, 2-1 to a Wright State team that is still unbeaten (3-0-1), and 2-0 to No. 13 Georgetown, which was a College Cup semifinalist a year ago.
- Gabby Bair, Petie Nassetta and Chloe Christakos have accounted for Bucknell's goals this season. Bair's strike was the overtime winner against Robert Morris. Christakos also has an assist and leads the team with three points. Lilly Courts and Alana Carlucci also have assists.
- Freshman Kaylee Donnelly has started every game in goal thus far. She has 21 saves with six goals against. Donnelly was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week after a sensational 12-save performance against Pitt.
- Head coach Kelly Cook is back for her fifth season in Lewisburg. Cook has a 47-31-6 overall record and a 26-8-2 mark against Patriot League competition. Cook's .595 winning percentage is the highest in team history, and she needs five more wins to catch Toby Lovecchio for third-most in program history.
- Senior Ali Russo is in her second year as a team captain. Bucknell's most experienced player has 64 career games under her belt, including 62 starts. Bair and junior Bri Kropinak are also co-captains.
- This year's team features 11 newcomers, comprised of 10 freshmen along with sophomore Molly Mishler.
- Bucknell has finished .500 or better in Patriot League play in each of the last six seasons. The Bison have also qualified for the Patriot League Tournament in each of those six seasons and 21 times overall. The 21 PL postseason appearances is tied with Navy for second-most in league history, trailing only Colgate with 26. Bucknell has advanced to the championship game six times and is 4-2 in those appearances, with the league titles coming in 2001, 2005, 2016 and 2017.
- Bucknell was picked tied for fifth (with Army West Point) in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. Boston University was selected as the preseason favorite, followed by Colgate, Navy and Lehigh.
About Cornell/Series History
- After finishing 1-13-1 last season, Cornell has already doubled that win total with a 2-0 start in 2019. The Big Red opened their campaign at home last weekend and defeated Iona 3-1 and Siena 1-0.
- Cornell and Iona were tied 1-1 at halftime before freshman Ashley Durik scored twice in the second half. Jamaican National Team member Jadyn Matthews also scored for the Big Red. Naomi Jaffe scored in the final minute of the first half in the win over Siena.
- Cornell has used two different goalkeepers thus far. Chrissy Mayer made five saves in the shutout of Siena, following a two-save performance from Nicole Shulman in the opener against Iona.
- Bucknell and Cornell have met 17 times, but not since 2011. The Big Red have a 10-6-1 lead in an all-time series that has seen long runs of success from both sides. Cornell went 9-0-1 over the first 10 meetings, but the Bison are 6-1 in the last seven. That includes a 1-0 verdict in Ithaca in the most recent clash, with the lone goal coming from Chelsey Garkowski in the 23rd minute.
- Towson is 1-3 to start the young season after finishing 4-12-1 last year. The Tigers have a 2-0 victory over in-state rival Mount St. Mary's, while the losses have come against Old Dominion (4-1), Marist (3-0) and Penn (2-0).
- Demi Pierre, a freshman from Sweden, scored both goals in the win over Mount St. Mary's. Jenna Blank scored against Old Dominion.
- Towson this season is debuting a new artificial turf field at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
- Bucknell has a 6-4 lead in a series that dates back to 1996. The Bison have won five of the last six, including 1-0 verdicts in each of the last three meetings in 2013, 2015 and 2018.
- Jenna Marek played a starring role in last year's game at Emmitt Field, as she stole a back pass and scored the winning goal in the 81st minute.
- The 2015 game was also decided on a late goal, with Cora Climo ripping the game-winner in the 86th minute.
- Bucknell enters Sunday's game with a shutout streak of 278:31 against Towson.
