Gearhart’s Late Goal Lifts Bucknell Women’s Soccer to 2-1 Win at Towson

TOWSON, Md. – Freshman Abby Gearhart, back in the lineup after suffering an injury in the season opener on Aug. 22, scored her first collegiate goal in the 84th minute to lift the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 2-1 away victory over Towson on Sunday afternoon at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
Bri Kropinack also scored for the Bison, who snapped a four-game losing streak dating back to the season-opening win over Robert Morris. Gearhart started that game in the midfield but exited with an injury late in the first half. She came in as a substitute in this one and made the most of her return appearance.
Gearhart collected a pass from classmate Rylee Donaldson along the right side of the area, dribbled past a defender and then cut back to the center before sliding a shot past Towson goalkeeper Lindsey Pazdziorko.
Playing with the lead once again, the Bison were able to keep the ball out of harm's way over the final six minutes to see out the win.
"We are very happy to come away with a hard-fought win on the road," said head coach Kelly Cook. "I told the team after the loss to Cornell on Friday night that sometimes you just need to find a way to win, and that's what we did today. We scored two nice goals, and I was really proud of the way we did what we needed to do after the second goal to protect the lead."
The Gearhart goal marked a nice response from the Bison after Towson had controlled play for much of the second half. Trailing 1-0 at intermission, the Tigers pressed right from the start of the second period. Freshman goalie Kaylee Donnelly made five of her six saves over the final 45 minutes, including three in the first 12 minutes as Bucknell had to fend off a flurry of corner kicks.
Towson finally cashed in on a corner in the 63rd minute, when Lexi Littlefield headed in a service from Monica Scaglione.
Donnelly made a great kick save on a point-blank shot from Jenna Blank in the 75th minute to keep the game on level terms, setting the stage for Gearhart's late winner.
"It was disappointing to give up the tying goal, but I liked how we responded," said Cook. "We kept working, which was great to see."
The Bison got off to a promising start, with Gabby Bair forcing starting keeper Delaney Mitchell to palm her shot out for a corner just 1:13 into the match. Then Bucknell's second shot of the day resulted in a goal.
Alana Carlucci's 16th-minute corner kick was cleared out to Kropinack at the top of the box, and she tucked in a low shot just inside the left post for her fourth career goal.
Towson finished with a 13-9 shot advantage and a 9-4 lead in corner kicks. The Bison defeated the Tigers for the sixth time in the last seven games, including four straight.
The Bison are back in action on Friday at home against Penn at 5 p.m.
