Perez-Pelaez Nets Brace for Third Goal in Two Games
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman Eddie Perez-Pelaez provided a brace for his third goal in two games, while Patrick O'Hara and Jacob Mittman each found their first career goals as Bucknell cruised to a 4-1 win over Canisius on Sunday afternoon.
The four goals were the most scored by the Bison since a 7-0 win over Howard on Oct. 11, 2016.
Jameson Railey provided the first scoring opportunity of the game after whipping in a free kick from about 25 yards out to the near post that forced a save from Canisius goalkeeper Tom Crosbie five minutes into the game.
The Bison, after trailing most of their season opener on Friday evening, found the back of the net in the early goings after Bernie Wright surged forward from his left back spot and played a nice penetrating pass to a run by the freshman Perez-Pelaez. Perez-Pelaez took a touch to the side to beat the onrushing Crosbie before calmly slotting home his second goal in as many games.
Canisius looked to equalize just minutes later after Federico Moreto struck a low bouncing shot from about ten yards out. Excellent defending from Quinn Bredin to take the sting off the shot combined with a critical touch from Bucknell goalkeeper Emmett Witmer managed to force the ball over the crossbar.
At the 15 minute mark, Stefan Gollisz forced a nice save from Crosbie on a well-struck volley after finding himself unmarked at the back post.
The Bison doubled their lead ten minutes later after some good work on the wing by freshman Mo Tall to beat his defender gave the Burkina Faso native space to send in a perfect cross to an unmarked Perez-Pelaez in the box for his second goal of the game.
The Golden Griffins nearly pulled one back at the 30-minute mark after a strong strike from Manuelle Cavvazzoli rattled the left post, with Witmer pouncing on the rebound to negate any chance for a follow up shot.
The Bison took a 2-0 lead into the half, and looked in control until the Golden Griffins nearly scored on an open net 10 minutes into the second half after Witmer ventured far out to make a clearance. However, Canisius couldn't convert the scoring opportunity as the Bison managed to maintain the two-goal advantage.
Witmer was called into action again with 23 minutes remaining after a hard shot from Cavazzoli forced the Cos Cob, Conn., native to palm the ball away at his near post for a corner kick.
Just minutes later, Matt Thorsheim found space on the wing before cutting inside and lofting a delicate pass to the six-yard box for an onrushing O'Hara, who leaped and got his right foot on the ball for his first career tally.
Canisius got on the board after a penalty kick from Troy Brady brought the Griffins within 3-1 in the 71st minute.
However, Bucknell responded well just 30 seconds later after pressing high on the subsequent kickoff. Railey latched onto a giveaway by the Canisius backline before sending in Mittman on the side of the 18-yard box. Mittman took one touch to the outside before slotting in his left-footed shot at the far post to restore the three-goal advantage.
The Bison defensive unit of Bredin, Wright, freshman Zach Hurchalla, and Patrick Mahoney held strong for the final minutes of the game, and limited the Golden Griffins in the second half aside from the penalty kick.
Senior captain Nick King also provided a lift for the Bison. After going 85 minutes in the center of the park just two days before, the Mattawan, Mich., native helped control the tempo of the game in the engine room while consistently finding openings for teammates.
Witmer made six saves, and helped limit opportunities for the Golden Griffins by coming off his line well in intercepting crosses and corner kicks in the second half.
"It's a very good response from a disappointing result on Friday night," head coach Brendan Nash said. "It was the home opener for Canisius, and they were rested. We dug deep, and our depth really helped us after playing on Friday evening. This game was a positive step moving forward."
The Golden Griffins outshot the Bison in overall attempts, 15-10, but nine of Bucknell's ten attempts managed to be on frame. Perez-Pelaez is now up to three goals in his first two games, while Mittman and O'Hara each scored their first career goals. Mittman, Wright, and Tall each tallied assists in the win.
Next up for the Bison is a home match against Mount St. Mary's on Friday evening at Emmitt Field. The game against the Mountaineers will be the first of three straight games in Lewisburg.
