Unearned Runs Prove Costly in Softball's 4-2 Loss at Army West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Bucknell softball lost a Patriot League series for the first time this season as it fell 4-2 in game three at Army West Point on Sunday. The Bison had swept each of their first four league series of the season.
Bucknell fell to 25-18 overall and 13-2 in the Patriot League, while Army West Point improved to 23-26 overall and 8-7 in the conference.
Despite the series loss, not a whole lot changes for Bucknell as far as potential playoff seeding. The Bison have one series left – three games at home against Boston University starting on May 4 – and can still win the regular season title and hosting rights for the four-team Patriot League Tournament with at least two wins against the Terriers.
The Bison led early on Sunday, jumping out to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single by Lauren Hadley that scored Allyse Volpe. They made it 2-0 with a run in the following inning when Ryanne Rokos scored on an RBI single by Nicole Rivait.
Things fell apart in the fourth inning as Army scored three unearned runs. The first run scored on an error that would have ended the inning. The Black Knights then took advantage of the extra out with a two-run single by Emily Ballesteros.
Army added a fourth unearned run in the fifth inning.
Lauren Lichtenwalner and Raeanne Geffert gave up two unearned runs apiece. Lichtenwalner started and went 3.1 innings, allowing one hit and one walk. Geffert allowed five hits and issued one walk while striking out three batters in 2.2 innings of relief.
Macey Newbarry started and pitched four innings to get the win. She gave up two runs on six hits and two walks. Jolie Duong pitched three scoreless and hitless innings of relief to notch the save.
Volpe singled twice for two of Bucknell's six hits. Rokos doubled, while Hadley, Anna Gimmestad, and Rivait each singled once.
Bucknell's next four games are against non-conference opponents, starting with a doubleheader at Penn State on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
