LEWISBURG, Pa. – Behind a complete team effort, Boston University downed the Bucknell women's lacrosse team, 19-7, on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field.
The Terriers (10-4, 5-1 Patriot League) raced out to a 12-2 lead in the first half and never looked back. Twelve different players found the back of the net over the course of the contest, with Mackenzie Howe and Kelly Mathews each recording a hat trick.
Free-position attempts and turnovers proved deciding factors in the game. Boston University made the Bison (4-10, 2-4 Patriot League) pay for the fouls they took in tight, converting on eight of their 10 free-position bids. The Terriers only gave up two free-position attempts over the course of the contest, with Bucknell capitalizing on neither. The Bison turned the ball over 20 times, double Boston University's total.
In addition, the Terriers held advantages in shots (43-19), shots on goal (28-14), ground balls (22-13) and draw controls (17-10). They also went a perfect 20-for-20 on clears.
For Bucknell, Tegan Warren registered four points on a goal and three assists while Eve Calabria and Morgan Steinhacker each struck twice. In net, Jamisen DeWitt and Lauren Kinnee combined for nine saves, with DeWitt tying Abby Neff for the team lead with three ground balls.
Tonianne Magnelli (6) and Kaitlin Belval (5) combined for 11 of Boston University's 17 draw controls. Ava Barry paced all players with four ground balls while Howe, Magnelli and Emily Vervlied tied for the game lead with three caused turnovers.
The Bison next travel to Patriot League power Loyola for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, April 17. They then return home to host Lehigh for Senior Day on Saturday, April 20. Before their 1 p.m. game against the Mountain Hawks, they will recognize Callie DeWitt, Jamisen DeWitt and Audrey Walsh for their contributions to the program.
