Women's Lacrosse Downs UMBC in Double Overtime

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Jamisen DeWitt made three of her season-best 15 saves in bonus time, and Sarah Dohler netted the game-winning goal on a free-position attempt, to lift the Bucknell women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 overtime victory over UMBC at a rain-soaked Graham Field on Thursday.
DeWitt, who entered the game needing 14 stops to become the seventh Bison with 500 in her career, was sensational in net. The senior set up Dohler's golden goal by stopping back-to-back shots on the Retrievers' first possession of the second bonus frame; she then denied Grayson Corbett from point-blank range to give her fellow captain the opportunity to win it for Bucknell just over a minute later at the 2:13 mark.
To send the game to overtime, the Bison battled back from a 9-5 deficit in the final 16:30 of regulation. They scored five of the final six goals, with Tegan Warren netting three in a row from the 16:02 to the 6:17 marks to draw them within one at 9-8. After Lillie Hunt found Kali Peeples for the equalizer with 1:48 remaining, Olivia Docal's fourth strike of the game gave UMBC a 10-9 lead with 22 seconds on the clock.
Morgan Steinhacker won the resulting draw control, giving Bucknell the chance to again even the score. And, with just .06 of a second left to play, Tace Sutherland finished off a Laurel McHale feed to send the game into bonus time.
DeWitt, who now boasts 501 career saves, also set the school record in career ground balls during the contest. Her four ground balls gave her 152 in her career; she passed Amy Hasler, who registered 150 between 2001 and 2004. DeWitt is the first Bison to eclipse 500 career saves since Alyssa DeLorenz, who made 689, the third most in school history, between 2008 and 2011.
At halftime, the Retrievers (2-8, 0-1 America East) and Bison (3-6, 1-0 Patriot League) were tied at four apiece. Bucknell appeared poised to carry a 4-2 lead into the break only to have UMBC score two goals in the final 16 seconds of the half. First, the Retrievers converted on a free-position attempt; then, they took advantage of a late green card to net the equalizer with four seconds on the clock.
UMBC carried the momentum from its late flurry into the second half, scoring four of its first five goals to build a 9-5 advantage. Undaunted, the Bison battled back, led by Warren (3g) and Sutherland (1g-1a).
Steinhacker and Warren each registered natural hat tricks while Dohler (2g) and Sutherland (1g-1a) also had multi-point games. Callie DeWitt, Abby Neff and Gabby Walsh led Bucknell with three caused turnovers, with DeWitt and Neff tying for the team high with four ground balls.
UMBC was led offensively by Docal (4g-1a), Lily Kennedy (2g-2a) and Corbett (2g). Carly Tolino and Sophie Shucosky combined for six saves while Cassie Evans was the game leader with five ground balls.
The Retrievers held advantages in shots (33-26), shots on goal (25-17) and ground balls (28-20). Because of the rain, which never let up over the course of the contest, both teams struggled with turnovers and clears. They combined for 55 turnovers and went a combined 48 of 57 on clears.
This was the Bison's first overtime win since their 2018 opener. In that 5-4 double overtime victory at Robert Morris, DeWitt made four of her 11 saves on overtime free-position bids to set up Mary Margaret Kenney to win it on a free-position attempt of her own.
Bucknell's game against UMBC was originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 6 at 4:30 p.m. It was postponed due to expected low temperatures.
The Bison next resume Patriot League play by traveling to No. 14 Navy for a 3:30 p.m. game on Sunday, March 23. The Mids are the two-time defending Patriot League champions.
