Bison Field Hockey Team Takes Part in Sink or Swim Educational Event for Kids

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell field hockey team conducted exercises in the areas of leadership, team-building, communication, problem-solving and perseverance with more than 80 girls in the third through sixth grades at the recent "Sink or Swim: A Girls' Morning of Aquatic Innovation, Exploration and Fun" event, sponsored by the Bucknell University College of Engineering. The young ladies in the program spent Sunday morning in Davis Gym and Kinney Natatorium doing hands-on, character and confidence-building activities that focused on STEM concepts, teamwork, and leadership development. Faculty and studens from the College of Engineering, College of Management, and Athletics facilitated interactive experiences that included hands-on aquatic robot challenges, aluminum boat buoyancy, "pitch a product" management games, and team-building exercises with Division I athletes.Â
The Bison field hockey student-athletes concluded each of their four sessions with an opportunity for the students to share what they learned with in a "snowball knowledge fight."Â
The free event was part of Bucknell's National Engineering Week celebration, with the intent of encouraging young women toward STEM and managerial career pursuit.Â
"Working at the Sink or Swim was a great way to meet some girls in the community and work with them on their teamwork skills," said junior Allie Christopher. "The games we played were fun but also allowed them to practice strategies like communication and working efficiently as a large group. I loved helping them develop and recognize these skills that we are constantly using on our team and in our daily lives."
"This was a great opportunity to connect with young girls who have a passion for learning and are a true joy to be around," said junior Brittany Willwerth. "Completing leadership activities that prompted them to really think and apply the lessons they learned to their own lives was a great experience and one that I and the entire team genuinely enjoyed."
