WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Bucknell football team fell to second-place Georgetown, 14-3, in its final road game of the 2018 campaign on Saturday at Cooper Field.
The Hoyas (5-5, 4-1 Patriot League) set a school record with their fourth Patriot League victory of the season by downing the Bison (1-9, 1-4 Patriot League). Freshman running back Herman Moultrie III provided all of the offense Georgetown needed, scoring one touchdown and recording 157 yards of total offense.Â
The Hoyas' stifling defense was the story of the game. They limited Bucknell to 153 yards of total offense, bolstered by seven sacks for a loss of 42 yards, and stalled three promising second-half drives to defend their 14-3 edge.
With 5:01 remaining in regulation, Rick Mottram forced and recovered a fumble that gave the Bison the ball at midfield. After a roughing the passer penalty pushed Bucknell up to the Hoya 33, Tarrin Earle hit Andrew Owers for a 26-yard gain to the seven-yard line. But Georgetown held fast, pressuring Earle into throwing three incomplete passes, including on fourth down.Â
After Bucknell forced the Hoyas to go three and out their resulting possession, Bryan Marine returned a short punt 26 yards to the Georgetown 22. But, with the Bison facing 4th and 8 at the 20, Xavier Reddick sacked Earle for a loss of 14 yards to end the game. Earlier in that quarter, with 14:47 on the clock, Reddick intercepted an Earle pass at his team's 28-yard line.
Ethan Torres booted a 37-yard field goal with 5:12 on the clock in the third quarter to get the Bison on the board. Torres's career-long field goal capped a 12-play, 38-yard drive that saw Earle convert on a 4th and 1 at the Hoya 23 with a two-yard quarterback sneak. Earle also connected with Jared Cooper for an 11-yard gain to the Georgetown 32 on 2nd and 6. Â
The Hoyas immediately responded, extending their lead to 14-3 less than two minutes later. Moultrie III accounted for all of his team's yards during its four-play scoring drive. First, he rattled off 14- and 30-yard runs on back-to-back plays to bring Georgetown to the Bucknell 21. Then, he capped the drive by hauling in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Gunther Johnson.
Â
After a scoreless first quarter, in which the teams combined for only 128 yards of total offense, the Hoyas took a 7-0 lead at the second quarter's 5:29 mark. Johnson orchestrated a nine-play, 78-yard scoring drive, highlighted by an explosive 36-yard rush by Moultrie III that brought Georgetown to the Bucknell 11. On 3rd and goal, Johnson scored a four-yard quarterback keeper to put his team ahead for good.
The Bison had an opportunity to get on the board after forcing a punt with 1:38 remaining in the half. Following a short punt, they took over at their 47 and advanced to the Hoya 43. But Georgetown held fast, pressuring Earle into throwing two-straight incomplete passes and then tying him up well short of a first down on a rush. While Bucknell lined up to go for it on 4th and 7 at the Hoya 40, the clock hit zero before the snap. Â
The stingy Georgetown defense, which entered the game ranked in the FCS's top 25 in total defense (16th, 315.4), scoring defense (t-21st, 21.9) and rushing defense (t-23rd, 124.0), limited the Bison to 60 yards and three first downs during the first half. Of those 60 yards, only seven came on the ground.
In his second career start, Earle completed 17 of 33 passes for 140 yards. Owers (39) and Brandon Sanders (38) were his favorite targets. On the ground, Cooper rushed for 34 yards on 20 carries.
Defensively, Marine (9), Brandon Benson (8) and Mottram (7) paced the Bison in tackles. Mottram also tied Sam Chitty for the team lead with two tackles for a loss.
Marine posted 37 punt return yards, bringing his season total to 291; he is now third in school history. He also recorded 49 kickoff return yards, giving him 589 on the year; he is now seventh all-time among Bison.
For the Hoyas, Moultrie III rushed for 135 yards on 22 carries and added 22 receiving yards on his first career touchdown catch. Johnson finished with 93 yards on eight of 15 passing. Their efforts helped Georgetown finish with advantages in total offense (292-153) and first downs (16-12).
Khristian Tate registered game-best totals in tackles for a loss (4) and sacks (2) while Wesley Bowers led all players with 11 tackles (six solo). In total, the Georgetown defense posted seven sacks for a combined loss of 42 yards and 11 tackles for a combined loss of 49 yards.
With the victory, the Hoyas snapped a two-game losing streak to the Bison. It was their first victory over Bucknell at Cooper Field since 2012; entering the contest, they were 2-8 against the Bison in their past 10 meetings.
Bucknell closes its 2018 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 17 by hosting Fordham. Before that 12 p.m. game, the Bison will honor their 17-man senior class.
