Men's Soccer Defeats Loyola, 1-0
10/3/2018 10:04:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BALTIMORE, Md. -- A complete game on both ends of the pitch from senior center back Tyler Peterson helped the Bucknell men's soccer team record a 1-0 win for its first unbeaten start through the first three games of the Patriot League season since 2007.
Peterson sprinted back in the 30th minute to stop a chip from Loyola's Brian Saramago, who lifted his ball over onrushing goalkeeper Ryan Ott. Peterson showed excellent awareness by staying with the play and clearing the bouncing ball right as it was about to cross the goal line.
Peterson then delivered on the offensive end of the field in the 51st minute, slotting his third goal of the season on a penalty kick won by Stefan Gollisz to give the Bison a 1-0 lead in a game that Bucknell didn't see too much of the ball.
Although the Bison had several quality chances on the counter, including a shot on target by Gollisz in the first half, it was Loyola who largely held onto the ball and created the lion's share of the chances.
The Greyhounds fired seven shots in the first half, although five of the efforts were blocked by the stingy Bison defense, which looked inspired all evening. The back line of Peterson, Quinn Bredin, Dany Teran, and Trevor Wiggins, who came on as a substitute in the first half, combined to give the Bison their fourth clean sheet of the season.
Loyola kept pressing throughout the second half, firing several attempts at goal which went either high or wide of the frame. However, the Greyhounds looked to be in a prime position to equalize after a foul in the box on Bucknell gave the Greyhounds a spot kick of their own. Saramago, a first team All-Patriot League selection a year ago, stepped up but fired his shot over the cross bar to keep the game at 1-0 in favor of the Bison.
Bucknell continued to defend well until the end of the game, where Ott had to make just his second save of the night to preserve the 1-0 win, the Bison's seventh straight over Loyola.
The high-powered Loyola attack had only been shut out twice this season coming into the matchup against Bucknell, and had scored two goals or more in four games this season. The Greyhounds held a 13-5 advantage in shots overall, but the two teams each had three shots on target. Loyola had not lost at home this season heading into tonight's game.
"This was an old-school, Bucknell grind-it-out win." Head Coach Brendan Nash said. "The guys played really hard tonight. We didn't create a lot of chances, but we did find some pockets of space when we needed to. Once we got the goal, we did a good job managing the game, and that's a tribute to Tyler Peterson, Quinn Bredin, and Ryan Ott knowing each other so well after all these years."
The Bison return to Emmitt Field on Sunday at 12 p.m. to face Holy Cross before hosting Colgate on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m.
